I obtained a book from another Hicks family member that is about the history of the various Hicks's that settled in Virginia and Maryland in the 1600's and it might be a good place to get some info on the family, mostly a Colonial history but it has some English origin discussion in it. He says that many of the Hicks's that came over in that period did so because they were loyalists who supported Charles I and lost some lands and rights during the English Civil War, he believes that some of the major Hicks families were decendents of Sir Robert Hicks, Baron of Gloucester and Sir Ellis Hicks of Gloucestershire, England. He says that many Hicks's today still remain in Gloucestershire and Yorkshire areas so there may be some lineal link to your ancestry.I have heard the theory before about the derivative of the Hicks name from "Richard" but the author of this book says that it was a tribal name derived from the Saxon name Hiviccas, the Saxon tribe Huicca who inhabited the Gloucestershire area shortly after the Saxon vikings invaded Sussex, England in 477 AD and worked their way westward and Northward until they reached there in approximately 577 AD.Historians have fairly well established the fact that these Saxon vikings are the ancestors of the Gloucestershire Hicks family. If you want any more info or would like to obtain a copy of the bookemail me at [email protected], if you are aware of any good English history books let me know, I am fascinated by English history and would love to know more.
