John,
Although I'm not an expert on the subject of Cherokee Hicks, my ignorance does not prevent me offering comment on your search for a Cherokee-connection.I am fairly certain (though always open to correction) that unless you can connect your Hicks to one of the Hicks named in James R. Hicks' list of Hicks, posted on his website at http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/h/i/c/James-R-Hicks/BOOK-0001/0022-0001.htmlhttp://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/h/i/c/James-R-Hicks/BOOK-0001/0022-0001.html , you're not likely to find any true Cherokee's support for your family's belief in a Cherokee connection.Hopefully, neither you nor other readers will misunderstand me, ....I do not mean to suggest that a Hicks-family story of Native American ancestry is untrue to me, only that the Eastern and Western Cherokee Nations aren't likely to give your family's story any credence unless and until you can show a documented biological relationship between your Hicks and Charles Renatus Hicks or his brother, William Abraham Hicks.
Good luck.
