Fact and Fancy:
(1) Fact:Charleston Deeds, VV-330.31 Mar 1759.George Hicks Sr. to George Hicks, Jr. both of Craven Co. 350a in the Welch Tract in Craven Co. along Peedee River, which tract was granted John Hicks on 18 Jan. 1745 by Gov. James Glen; & sold by John Hicks on 4 June 1748 to George Hicks, Sr., Wit:Henry Bedingfield, Robert Graves.
[Notes:George Hicks Sr., son of Brunswick Co. Va. Robert and Frances Hicks.Colonel George Hicks, Jr., brother to James and Judith Hicks of Brunswick Co., Robert and Mary Hicks, and Lucy (Hicks), wife of Benjamin Seawell.FANCY #1:Therefore, I believe, John Hicks, first owner of the land, was brother to George Hicks Sr. and son of Brunswick Co. VA Robert and Frances Hicks.Henry Bedingfield's wife, I believe, was Martha Hicks, daughter of Robert and Frances.]
(2) HICKS IN PRE-REVOLUTIONARY CHARLESTON DEEDS (Copied by
Laura Dellinger Jones), Book F-4, P. 198
Indenture 15 February 1775, John Hamer of Anson County, North Carolina to Claudius Pigues of St. Davids Parish ... 240 acres...part of a tract of 640 acres granted to John Hicks 22 May 1741 ...on N.E. side of Peedee River which said tract of 240 acres the said John Hicks conveyed to John Hamer Senior late of North Carolina, 17 June 1743.
Wit.William Pigues and William Hicks.John Hamer.
Proved by William Pegues 20 Feb. 1775 and recorded 30 June 1775.
[Notes:William Pegues, son of Claudius, married Sarah Hicks, daughter of Colonel George Hicks Jr., granddaughter of George Hicks Sr., therefore great-neice of George Sr.'s brother, John Hicks.]
(3) Fact:Will of John Hicks, of Anson County, wife: Obedience Hicks, sons: William and John, daughters: Frances Hicks and Mary Hicks, granddaughter:Sarah Hicks.Signed by John Hicks 24 April 1760.Witnesses:Alex. Gordon, Wm. Hicks.Proved May 1761.
(4) Fact:Anson County, North Carolina, Abstracts of Early Records, The May Wilson McBee Collection, Volume One, 1950.Will Book I,
P. 78 (15 July 1772). Admr. on estate John Hicks granted Francis Hicks.Bond:Chas. Medlock & Samuel Snead for 1000 pounds.
P. 82 (14 Oct. 1772) Inventory of estate of John Hicks, decd. returned on oath.
P. 83 (17 Oct. 1772) Grd. Chas. Medlock and Saml. Snead, esq. guardians to Francis Hicks and Martha Hicks, orphans of John Hicks, deceased.Bond: James Pickett and John Jackson...
P. 127 Abstracts of Probate Reports, 1749-1789, Will Book 1, p. 130, Oct. Court 1772.John Hicks.Inventory by John Husbands & Frances Husbands.
P. 132, Will Book 1, p. 295 6 Nov. 1772.Sales estate of John Hicks names John Husbands, Matthew Terry, James Pickett, etc.
[Notes:Fancy #2:John Hicks who dies by 1772 was son of John and Obedience. This John Hicks Jr. leaves wife, Frances, as adminstratrix of will and estate, and leaves two daughters:Francis and Martha Hicks, whose guardians are Charles Medlock and Samuel Snead/Sneed.
After John Jr. died, widow Francis married (don't quote me on this because I can't find my documentation at the moment) either a Hamer or Samuel Snead/Sneed.If someone was suing Charles Medlock, it could be he siphoned off assets/funds intended for heirs of John Hicks Jr.
Fancy #3 till proven otherwise, Nathaniel Curtis married one of John Hicks Sr.'s daughters:Frances or Mary.
[Watch out! That would be Frances #1, not Frances #2 or #3 who were John Hicks Jr.'s wife and daugher.]
5.Fact:I welcome comments, corrections, or documented info, if available, on William Hicks, son of John Hicks Sr. and Obedience.
