Bob Hix and I are well acquainted and mutually respect each other's investigatory skills. However, in your case, I'm inclined to disagree with his theory, as I will attempt to explain in part now and more later.Personally, if I were you, I'd look toward South Carolina for connections. The fact that Daniel Hicks, proposed brother of your great-great-grandfather (Amanda's husband, Elijah), was reported to have been born in South Carolina moves my attention there.
Regarding your earliest known Elijah, I've seen the 1845 marriage record for him and Sarah Corley. That suggests to me that, although that's surely the maiden name of the Sarah/Sallie with him in the 1850 and 1860 census, she was not the mother of your great-great-grandfather Elijah (Amanda's husband).
Don't let the fact that Sarah's husband, Elijah, is reported to have been born in Georgia prevent you from looking for South Carolina connections.I say that because, knowing that Elijah Hicks was born in the 1790's, I went looking for evidence that he might have served in some milirary force during the War of 1812.
I find that Elijah Hicks, 20 years old, born in Sumter, S.C., was enlisted for a term of 5 years on 4 Oct. 1814 by Lt. S.A. Taylor and initially served as a private in the 43rd Infantry. He was promoted to sargeant and deserted from Ft. Moultrie on 3 August 1815.
Althought Elijah's age, in the 1860 census, is given as 60, his age in the 1850 census is given as 56, which would put him born in 1794, and that--if true--would make him about 20 in 1814.
The question you'll ask is this:Was your Elijah born in S.C. as reported in the Enlistment Record in 1815, or in Georgia as reported in the 1850 and 1860 census?I don't know, but ... you have to admit that it's interesting to find an Elijah Hicks in South Carolina which is the state that Daniel Hicks said he was born in around 1821.
