James M Hicks' Parents

I have been searching for the parents of James M Hicks b 1822 d 1899. He lived primarily in what is present day McDowell County, North Carolina. For a long time, I suspected that his parents were James Hicks b 1800 d 1858 and Anna Higgins b 1799 d 1880. However, recently a trip to the Burke County, North Carolina library (present day McDowell County was formed from Burke County and Rutherford County) revealed a possible alternate.

Here's what I KNOW:

James Hicks (who married Anna Higgins) had a brother Daniel Hicks (b 1790) who married Anna's sister Elizabeth. My trip to Burke County revealed that James and Daniel had another sibling Moses who married a Matilda. Moses died in 1823 leaving his wife, Matilda and two young children Annes and James (orphan records). Moses' executor was his brother Daniel. It seems to me that one of these brothers is the father of James M. On the orphan records, it never lists any middle initial for James. Moses is on the 1820 census with one female (assumed to be Matilda). Moses died in Mar 1823. If James M is James, that would mean that Annes was older than him. I do not know if Annes is male or female because the court records refer to Matilda and two young children, not two young sons. I have searched for a burial for Moses but have been unsuccessful to date. I do not know what Matilda's maiden name was yet. Matilda died about 1837.

I do know that James M could NOT be the son of Daniel and Elizabeth, as they had one known child, a son, James Young Hicks born Mar 1823. I believe that they had other children, but at present, I cannot identify them by name.

Does anyone have any information which could help prove parentage?

James and Anna are buried in the Providence Methodist Cemetery in the Sugar Hill area of the county (south side of Marion), whereas James M and his descendants are buried in the Hicks Chapel Missionary Baptist Cemetery in the North Cove area of the county.

I have been told (and it does make sense) that James M and Sarah were attending a church where the Green Mountain Cemetery is today. They had a dispute with someone/something there and developed their own church, first meeting at home and when others started joining them, they established the Hicks Chapel Baptist Church and Cemetery. The church at the Green Mountain Cemetery burned down. The Green Mountain Cemetery is where many of the family members of families the Hicks' married are buried (Huskins and Hensleys specifically).
