PLAINS ? Maxine Thelma Hicks Smiley of Philadelphia, formerly of Plains, will be held at 3:30 p.m. today in the sanctuary of The Lebanon Baptist Church in Plains and burial will follow in The Lebanon Cemetery. The Rev. George Edge will officiate. Mrs. Smiley passed April 15, 2007.
Mrs. Smiley was born in Plains on Dec. 31, 1930. She was the sixth of eight children born to Abe Hicks and Mozelia Schley Hicks in Sumter County. She attended elementary school in Plains and graduated from Staley High School in 1948. She joined Lebanon Baptist Church at early age and was a faithful member until she moved to Philadelphia and joined Resurrection Baptist Church.
On Nov. 5, 1949 she married the late James L. Smiley. Mrs. Smiley was employed by the U.S.P.S. from Nov. 1970 until she retired in Feb. 2005; she started baby-sitting her great-granddaughters, Makia and Taylor. Preceded by her parents Abe and Mozelia Schley Hicks; siblings, Herman Hicks, Eddie Kenneth Hicks, Ruby Lee Norwood, Lucy B. Jenkins and Miriam Brown.
Survivors include: two sons, Lawrence and Kenneth; four daughters, Dorothy, Patricia, Ruby and Miriam; two daughters-in-law, Patrice and Stephanie; 16 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harold Hicks of Philadelphia and Charles Hicks of Plains; aunt, Maude Jackson of Miami; four sisters-in-law, Mamie, Marilyn, Peggy and Janet; special friend, Charlotte Wilson of Philadelphia and a host of nieces, nephews and many cousins.
