Joseph Vernon Hicks, Sr, Bristol TN
Joseph Vernon Hicks, Sr., age 85 of 1529 Edgemont Avenue,
Bristol, TN, passed away Saturday, April 28, 2007 at
Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Mountain Home, Tennessee.
Born August 11, 1921, in Scott County, VA, he was the
oldest of nine children of the late Lee Roy Hicks and the
late Ona Kilgore Hicks. In addition to his parents, he was
preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Edith Christine
Cole Hicks, a loving wife, mother, grandmother and
caregiver. One sister, the late Allie Hutchinson and her
late husband Garnett, One brother, the late Lee Roy Hicks,
Jr. In the late thirties, Mr. Hicks was employed in the
last Conservation Core, a government program created under
President Roosevelt during the depression years. In his
earlier years, he was a caregiver and devoted much time
and help in his mother’s work, who owned Hicks Nursing
Home in Bristol. He was a disabled decorated veteran of
World War II, which he fought in three battles. Mr. Hicks
served in the 176th Signal Company under General Douglas
McArthur. He was also awarded with the Good Conduct Medal,
American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Medal with two
Bronze Service Stars, World War II Victory Medal,
Philippine Liberation Ribbon with One Bronze Service Star,
Honorable Service Lapel Button WWII and Marksman Badge
with Rifle Bar.
He is survived by: one son, Joseph Vernon Hicks, Jr.,
Bristol, TN; one granddaughter, Lisa Jo Hicks, Bluff City,
TN; and fiance’, Ernie Cox; former daughter-in-law,
Patricia Campbell Nickels- Bluff City, TN; three Brothers,
Emory Hicks and wife, Geneva, Panama City Beach, FL; Rex
(Tommy) Hicks and former wife, Helen Flores, Bristol; Ezra
Hicks and wife, Margie, Bristol, TN; three Sisters, Faye
Addingdon and late husband, Darrell; Nell Whitzel and late
husband, Ralph, Kingsport, TN; Louise McDevitt and
husband, Jim (Bud), Bristol, VA; also Several Nephews and
Nieces; two special friends of the family, Wesley F.
Taylor and Ms. Alma Elmore also from Bristol.
A funeral mass will be held Tuesday, May 1, 2007 at 3:30
PM at St. Anne Catholic Church with Rev. Timothy E. Keeney
officiating. Graveside will follow at Forest Hills Memory
Gardens, Abingdon, VA. with full military honors conducted
by the Bristol VFW Honorguard. Pallbearers will be Bob
Addingdon, Gary Addingdon, Steven Addingdon, Anthony
Hicks, David McDevitt, Shane Smith, Rev. Garry Cole,
Lonnie Cole, Bob Statzer, Johnny Statzer, Ray Umbarger,
Ronnie Umbarger, Johnny Ruthledge, Johnny White, Bill
Sullins and Terry Cornett. The family will receive friends
at St. Anne Catholic Church, Euclid Avenue at 1:30 to 3:30
PM prior to the funeral mass at 3:30 PM. The family would
like to express thanks to the wonderful staff at the
Veterans Affairs Medical Center Extended Care Unit for the
up-most care that was given. The family wish no flowers,
but request donations to; Faith in Action, c/o St. Anne
Catholic Church or the charity of your choice.
