Oscar Newton Hibler, Jr.--OBIT
OSCAR NEWTON HIBLER, Jr., died in Houston on August 25, 2000. A fifth generation Houstonian, he was born on November 27, 1920 to Oscar Newton Hibler and Florence Bering Hibler. His mother was a member of a large clan of Berings whose grandfather came to Houston in 1846. Oscar attended Fannin Elementary, Lanier Jr. High, and San Jacinto High School. He graduated with a BA from Rice Institute in 1942 and obtained his LLB from the University of Texas Law School in 1948. He volunteered for service to his country with the Navy on December 8, 1941 and served in the Pacific Theatre for four years. When the Korean Conflict began he was immediately called up as an active reserve and then served for 20 years on the amphibious ships and later on several destroyers. He retired in 1968 with the rank of Captain and returned to Houston where he worked for Harlan Insurance. Following this he was with Linbeck Construction Co. as staff attorney for 12 years until his retirement. His retirement years were spent extensively traveling in the U.S. with an emphasis on Texas. He wrote a news column for his class of '42 at Rice and was diligent in trying to find and report the news of his classmates. One of his major projects was to compile a 285 page genealogy of the Bering family and later thru his genealogy research he discovered Hibler cousins he never knew he had and was thrilled to meet them.
