Eliza W. (Hiatt?) Hadley, book inscription 1858
I have recently “rescued” an old book (published 1858) with the following inscription:
Eunice Hadley—
With affectionate love accept this from thy attached friend.
Eliza W. Hadley
9th month 7th 1858
The book is the memoirs of William and Nathan Hunt, Quakers.
I have no connection to this book other than trying to find a descendant or other place to send it to where it will be preserved and appreciated.
There’s a loose note in the book that it had belonged to Joseph Newby of Indiana. Not known how or if Joseph is related to either of the Hadley women.
Because of the connection to Indiana, I think the women could be Eunice Hobson Hadley (1822-1901), who married Simon Hadley (1810-1896). Eliza may be Eliza W. Hiatt Hadley (1812-1900) who married (2) Samuel Hadley (1811-1887). (She was the widow of Jesse Reynolds.) In 1860, Eunice was living in Parke Co., IN. I haven’t found Eliza yet in 1860, but in 1870, she’s in Morgan Co., IN. Eliza and Samuel married in Wayne Co., IN, in 1852. The latter couple had a child, Jesse Hiatt Hadley (1854 - ). As Eliza calls Eunice her “friend” I’m thinking they are not sisters.
I don’t know how Simon and Samuel are related, but one of you have access to that information.
As the book has has a signature of Eliza W. Hadley, I would think a descendant of Jesse Hiatt Hadley might like it.
If you're a relative or have suggestions of where this book should go, please contact me.
Thank you.
