Star-Bulletin reporter needs help
Aloha,
My name is Pat Omandam and I'm a reporter for the Honolulu Star-Bulletin. I'm working on a few stories that involves families, and I need some guidance on
genealogy in Hawaii.
To make things simple, I'm looking for people to interview on the record for stories that focus on these issues:
1.Genealogy reserach:How does one in Hawaii go about searching their family roots? What resources are available? Where should they start? Are there genealogists for hire that will do the work for you? How much does it cost? How long does it take? How far back can you go in Hawaii? Questions
along those lines.
2.Genealogy findings:What's your experience shown as a genealogist in Hawaii? What are some typical findings when researching a family tree here? Are there any families trees that are prominent throughout the islands?
What's the farthest you've traced a Hawaii family history? What's the motivation for many families? Is this a growing interest? How has the Internet helped in this field? What efforts are underway in Hawaii?
3.Your own families, The newspaper wants to hear from local folks who have researched their own family trees and how that has changed their
understanding of who they are and where they came from. Of particular interest is tying your genealogy to key dates in Hawaii's history. Perhaps an
ancestor was there when Capt. Cook arrived/killed, or an ancestory worked in the Hawaiian Kingdom government, or great-grandmother witnessed first hand the 1893 overthrow of the monarchy.
There are many stories about the prominent families of Hawaii's history but we want to hear from the lesser known families to give these stories a fresh perspective.
I'll be working on these stories in the upcoming weeks. If you feel you can help me on any or all of these areas, please contact me. My e-mail address
is:[email protected].
Also, my telephone number is(808) 525-8630.My fax is (808) 537-9443.
Since the Star-Bulletin now competes directly against the Honolulu Advertiser in morning and afternoon editions, my only caveat is that you not share this with any other media -- newspaper or TV.
I look forward to hearing from you.
This is a good opportunity to get some of your hard work (and some family pictures) in the newspaper, which years from now will also become another source for genealogists.
Mahalo,
Mr. Pat Omandam
