Re: Bio of Elizabeth (Biles) Beakes Hughes (1670-1767)
Lea Buzby 3/04/02
Lea,
I do not have in my files the Elizabeth Hughes who married John Crispin, nor do I have info on the Hughes-Buzby or Hughes-Doan people you mention.Where did your Atkinson Hughes and family live?
Yes, I descend from Mathew Hughes, Sr. of Bucks Co., PA who married Eliazabeth (Biles) Beakes (through Mathew, Jr, then Isaac Hughes, and then Elizabeth Hughes who married Joseph Holmes in Loudoun Co., VA).Here is some information on Mathew, Sr. and his children:
--Nick Sheedy,
John Day, Oregon

Descendants of Mathew Hughes, Sr.
Generation No. 1
1.MATHEW21 HUGHES, SR.(HUMPHREY20, HUMPHREY19 HEWES, HUMPHREY18 HEWIS, HUMPHREY17 HEWES, HUMPHREY16, JOHN15 HEWYSHE, OLIVER14 HYWISH, OLIVER13 HEWES, JOHN12 HYWISH, OLIVER11, GILBERT10 HEWES, RICHARD9 DE HYWIS, GEFFRY8, JOHN7, JOHN6, RICHARD5, WILLIAM DE4 LA HYWIS, RICHARD DE3, WILLIAM DE2 LA HEUSE, HUBERT DE1) was born Bet. 1670 - 1676 in Long Island, NY, and died Bef. 3 September 1766 in Buckingham Twp., Bucks Co., PA.He married ELIZABETH BILES Bet. 7 January - 3 June 1702 in Bucks Co., PA, daughter of WILLIAM BILES and JOANNA HELLARD.She was born 3 June 1670 in Dorchester, Dorset Co., England, and died 17 July 1767 in Buckingham Twp., Bucks Co., PA.
Notes for MATHEW HUGHES, SR.:
Mathew Hughes, Sr. was likely born at Oyster Bay or Southold, Long Island between 1670 and 1676.He is likely the son of Humphrey Hughes who is the progenetor also of the Hughes family of Cape May Co., NJ.It is believed that Mathew Hughes, Sr. arrived at Bucks Co., Pennsylvania from Long Island in 1696.He married, in early 1702, Elizabeth Biles Beakes, daughter of Judge William and Joanna (Hellard) Biles, and widow of Stephen Beaks who died in 1699.Elizabeth had five children by Stephen Beakes. She was the daughter of a prominent Quaker preacher, Judge, Assemblyman, Councilman, and Justice of the Peace in Bucks County.
Mathew Hughes, Sr. was prominent in early Buckingham Twp., and was one of the petitioners to build the York Road connecting Buckingham to Philadelphia. When Buckingham Twp. was platted in 1703, he required the surveyors rearrange the north-east corner of the township line so that his home would be withing the boundary of Buckingham Twp.That property was in the posession of his son, Mathew, Jr., in 1755.The old home stands today along Carversville road at the north-east corner of Buckingham Twp. and is still a substantial residence after nearly 300 years.
Mathew and Elizabeth had four sons who were named in Mathew, Sr.'s will. His son, Mathew, Jr., preceded him in death in 1755.Mathew (Sr.) and Elizabeth were members of the Society of Friend (although Mathew apparently was not a very active member) and they raised their children in the Quaker faith.Mathew is named in his father-in-law's will as "Mathew Hewes".
Mathew Hughes, Sr. was a man of little formal education, but he was litterate, well respected, and a man of considerable influence. He was said by a contemporary to have been "a man of strong mind, good natural abilities, great integrity, and of amiable disposition."He lived in Buckingham Twp. and represented Bucks Co. for 15 consecutive years in the Pennsylvania Colonial Assembly from 1723 to 1738.According to History of Bucks County, he was also a "Justice of the Peace fora long time --a greater number of years, it is said, than any other man in the county."Mathew and Elizabeth were married for about 65 years.Mathew (Sr.) died before Sept. 1766 in Buckingham Twp. Bucks Co., PA and is likely buried at the Quaker graveyard there. His wife, Elizabeth, survived him by one year and died 17 July 1767, aged 97 years.
Mathew Hughes, Sr. left a will dated 17 April 1762, proved 3 Sept. 1766, and filed at Bucks Co., PA (#1199).Executors were his son, Uriah Hughes, Sr., and grandson George Hughes. The will names four sons: Uriah, Elias, George, and Mathew (deceased). His will also names granddaughter Hannah Hughes, and grandsons George Hughes, John Hughes, and Mathew Hughes, Jr.The list of his children may not be complete but I have yet to locate a record naming them and all their birthdates even after searching records of Buckingham MM, Falls MM, and Middleton MM in Bucks Co., PA.The Charity Hughes named in the will of Uriah Hughes, Sr., who "had long lived with us" could have been a sister and therefore also a child of Mathew Hughes, Sr.; she could just as easily be a granddaughter of Mathew, Sr. or some other relation.
Notes for ELIZABETH BILES:
Elizabeth Biles was born 3 June 1670 in Dorchester, Dorset Co., England, the first child of William and Joanna (Hellard) Biles. Her birth is recorded in the minutes of Dorchester MM, Dorset Co.Her parents had recently become Quakers and Elizabeth was raised among Friends. Her father was a Quaker minister, a prominent Judge in Pennsylvania, and held substantial tracts of land in in Pennsylvania and West New Jersey.
She arrived in America at the Delaware River on the ship Elizabeth and Sarah 4 June 1679, one day after her ninth birthday. She traveled with her sister, three brothers, parents, and uncle. The family first took up residence at Burlington Twp., West New Jersey before removing across the Delaware River to what would become Bucks Co., Pennsylvania sometime in late 1679 or early 1680.
Elizabeth Biles married Stephen Beakes in 1688.Her liberation to marry Stephen is recorded at Falls MM 1st day, 6th month, 1688.The marriage is recorded at Middletown MM:"Stephen Beaks, of Bucks Co., yeoman, married 31st day of 8th month (October), 1688, Elisabeth Biles, spinster, of co. aforesaid, at house of William Biles."She had five children by Stephen Beaks: John, Mary, Grace, and two others; the two other children likely died young.Stephen and Elizabeth owned land in Plumstead Twp., Bucks Co., PA, adjacent to Buckingham Twp.
Falls MM, Men's minutes, on 3rd day, 5th month, 1695, "reported that Stephen Beaks is slack in his attendance at meetings and beating his wife.Awaiting consent of Mary Beaks regarding marriage of Samll. Beaks and Johanah Biles."Stephen Beakes was a member of the Colonial Assembly in 1697.He died in 1699, aged 31 years.
Elizabeth married, her second husband, Mathew Hughes (Hewes) in early 1702.They had four sons who are mentioned in Mathew Hughes, Sr.'s will: Mathew, Uriah, George and Elias.Their son, Mathew Hughes Jr,, preceded his parents in death in 1755.They were members of the Society of Friends; Elizabeth was raised in the faith, and their children married into Quaker families.
Elizabeth and Mathew were married for 64 years. They owned land in Plumbstead Twp., and Buckingham Twp., and lived on a 40 acre tract in the north-east corner of Buckingham Twp., Bucks Co. (the same tract occupied by their son, Mathew, Jr. in 1755).Mathew Hughes died 3 Sept. 1766 in Buckingham Twp.Elizabeth survived him one year; she died 17 July 1767, aged 97 years. They are likely buried at a Quaker graveyard there.Their stone home north of Carversville Road in Buckingham Twp. still stands and is an impressive residence.
NOTE: from Middletown MM births:"Children of Stephen and Elizabeth (Biles) Beaks: James Beaks b. 5th day of 6th month, 1689; Mary Beaks b. 9th day of 9th month, 1690; Elizabeth Beaks b. 15th day of 3rd month, 1698."
Marriage Notes for MATHEW HUGHES and ELIZABETH BILES:
From Falls MM, Men's minutes, Bucks Co., PA:
7th day, 11th month (January), 1701-02-- "Informed that Elizabeth Beakes is going to take Mathew Hewes to her husband, being not in unity with Friends."(Evidently, Mathew Hewes was not a Quaker at that time.)
3rd day, 4th month (June), 1702 - "Friends to speak to Elizabeth Hughes and Mary Robbins concerning their disorderly carriage."
Children of MATHEW HUGHES and ELIZABETH BILES are:
2. i. LT. COL. MATHEW22 HUGHES, JR., b. 4 July 1703, Bucks Co., PA; d. 23 October 1755, Bucks Co., PA.
ii. URIAH HUGHES, b. Bet. 1700 - 1715, Bucks Co., PA; d. Bef. March 1784, Buckingham Twp., Bucks Co., PA; m. JENNETT HARTLEY, 14 January 1732, Buckingham MM, Buckingham Twp., Bucks Co., PA; b. 1710, Lahaska, Bucks Co. PA; d. 1784, Solebury, Bucks Co., PA.
Notes for URIAH HUGHES:
I estimate his birth before 1715 only because his mother would have been 45 years old by then.
Uriah Hughes, Sr. was the primary petitioner for the administration of the estate of Sylvester Hughes (likley his first-cousin), of Upper Makefield, Bucks Co. in 1752 and 1753.Sylvester's son, Zebadee, was bound to Uriah Hughes in 1752 but died of the small pox, aged about 21 years.Sylvetser's son, John was also to be bound "to some personal calling".
Uriah Hughes, Sr. and his nephew, George Hughes, were named the executors of his Mathew Sr.'s will, probated in 1766.
He lived in Buckingham Twp. and married Jennette Hartley who survived him by a few months.I assume they had no children, or at least no children to survive them, as none are named in his will and he names neices and nephews and others; similarly, the administration of his wife's estate does not mention children.
Uriah Hughes Sr., made his will 5 April 1782 and his estate was probated in 1784 (#1913; Will Book No. 4, page 325).He named his nephew, Uriah Hughes, Jr. (son of Elias Hughes) and David Forst as executors.Others he named as heirs include: Jennett (Hartley) Hughes, his wife; Elias Hughes, his brother; Charity Hughes "who has long lived with us"; Elizabeth (Hughes) Smith, wife of Robert Smith and daughter of brother Elias Hughes;nephews, Mathew (3rd), Thomas, Isaac, and Constantine, sons of his brother Mathew, Jr., deceased; and "Cousin John Hughes Shoemaker"*.Witnesses were: Samuel Harrold; William Bennett; John Large.
On 10 March 1784, Mathew Hughes (3rd) petitioned the Probate Court of Bucks County to contest the will, claiming that Uraih Hughes, Sr. was not of sound and disposing mind or memory when he made his will and that the witnesses pressed him to sign it.The Probate Court requested many depositions from neighbors and others. The consensus was that Uriah hughes was of sound mind and memory and the will was proved 22 March 1784.
Uriah Hughes, Sr., sold or gave all his realestate to his nephew, Uriah, Jr., prior to 1782 when the will was written with the condition that Uriah, Jr. provide for his aunt, Jennett (Hartley) Hughes.Uriah, Sr. gave Jennett, his wife, his best bed, some furniture and 50 pounds current money. He gave all his clothing to Elias Hughes, his brother. He gave five pounds to Mathew Hughes, Jr., his nephew. He gave 20 pounds to Elizabeth Smith, his neice. He gave 100 pounds and a clock to Charity Hughes "who has long lived with us".He gave 20 pounds to his "cousin", John Hughes Shoemaker. He gave 20 pounds to Isaac Hughes, his nephew. He gave the remainder of his estate to Thomas Hughes and Constantine Hughes, his nephews.
* "Cousin" John Hughes is noted as "shoemaker" in Uriah's will.I note he may be the John Hughes, son of Sylvester Hughes (Uriah's first-cousin), although I do not know if that John Hughes was a shoemaker in 1782.If so, this John Hughes was a first-cousin, once removed and Uriah was appointed his guardian in 1752.It seems unlikely that Uriah would use "cousin" as a general term to describe some kinship; he specifies the relationship to his brother, neices and nephews and so this John Hughes cannot be confused with his nephew, John Hughes. We can safely assume that the relationship of this John Hughes to Uriah Hughes was as a "cousin".For that to be so, the relationship would be through his father's or mother's siblings:This John Hughes was more than likley related through Abner Hughes, brother to Mathew Hughes, Sr. (see notes under John Hughes.)
However, reading the actual will --in the original pen-- there is no comma or other mark between the name and vocation but simpy reads "John Hughes Shoemaker".In the unlikely possibility that Shoemaker was a name rather than an occupation, I note there was a Shoemaker family that lived in nearby Montgomery and Philadelphia Co.s and they were Quakers, close to the family of Mary (Dawes) Spencer, and that Adrian Dawes and Francis Dawes, her nephews, were witnesses to the will of Mathew Hughes, Sr.
Notes for JENNETT HARTLEY:
She died in 1784.Her small estate was administered by her brother, Thomas Hartley of Solebury, in that year and gives her place of residence as Solebury at the time of her death. No mention of children is made in the administration of her estate or the estate of her husband.
Marriage Notes for URIAH HUGHES and JENNETT HARTLEY:
Their marriage date is recorded at Buckingham MM, Bucks Co., PA.This date is also found in an index of New Jersey Marriage Licenses, noting that Uriah was "of Bucks, Pa."
3. iii. GEORGE HUGHES, b. Bet. 1700 - 1715, Bucks Co., PA; d. Bef. 11 April 1795, Buckingham Twp., Bucks Co., PA.
4. iv. ELIAS HUGHES, b. Bet. 1700 - 1715, Bucks Co., PA; d. Abt. 1792, Buckingham Twp., Bucks Co., PA.
v. CHARITY HUGHES.
Notes for CHARITY HUGHES:
I have found several references to a Charity, daughter of this couple.I find no primary sources that support this relationship. However, it very plausable that this "Charity Hughes" is the same mentioned in the will of Uriah Hughes (writing that she had long lived with him and his wife) and it would explain how she fits in the family. She likely was not married and I have found no other reference to her.
Generation No. 2
2.LT. COL. MATHEW22 HUGHES, JR. (MATHEW21, HUMPHREY20, HUMPHREY19 HEWES, HUMPHREY18 HEWIS, HUMPHREY17 HEWES, HUMPHREY16, JOHN15 HEWYSHE, OLIVER14 HYWISH, OLIVER13 HEWES, JOHN12 HYWISH, OLIVER11, GILBERT10 HEWES, RICHARD9 DE HYWIS, GEFFRY8, JOHN7, JOHN6, RICHARD5, WILLIAM DE4 LA HYWIS, RICHARD DE3, WILLIAM DE2 LA HEUSE, HUBERT DE1) was born 4 July 1703 in Bucks Co., PA, and died 23 October 1755 in Bucks Co., PA.He married ELIZABETH STEVENSON 17 May 1733 in Middleton MM, Bucks Co., PA, daughter of THOMAS STEVENSON and SARAH JENINGS.She was born Abt. 31 January 1711 in Bucks or Philadelphia Co., PA, and died 17 January 1767 in Plumstead Twp., Bucks Co. (?or Philadelphia Co.), PA.
Notes for LT. COL. MATHEW HUGHES, JR.:
Prof. Mathew Hughes (Jr.), Lt. Col. was born 4th day, 5th month (July), 1703 in Buckingham Twp., Bucks Co., PA, the son of Mathew Hughes (Sr.) and Elizabeth Biles Beaks. He married Elizabeth Stevenson, daughter of Thomas Stevenson (III) and Sarah Jenings Pennington. At the Men's meeting of Middletown MM, Bucks Co., PA, Matthew Hughs proposed his intentions of marriage with Elizabeth Stevenson of Middletown Monthly Meeting and his father consented on 7th day, 1st month, 1732.She declared her intention to marryMathew Hughes, Jr. 17th day, 2nd month, 1733 at Middletown MM and they were married at that place the 17th day, 3rd month, 1733.Elizabeth Stevenson was the granddaughter of Governor Samuel Jenings of Burlington Twp., NJ and Philadelphia, PA.
Mathew served as a Lt. Col. in the Associated Regiment of Bucks Co. in 1747 and 1748.He and Elizabeth had 10 children together and they were raised among Friends. They were members of Falls and Buckingham MM.Mathew Hughes, Jr. was granted certificate to transfer from Falls MM to Buckingham MM 6 June 1752.He died 23rd day, 10th month, 1755, aged 52 years. He left his wife with children ranging in ages from 16 years to one year old.Elizabeth died 17th day 1st month, 1767 reportedly in Philadelphia (?city or Co.), PA.The death dates for Mathew and Elizabeth are recorded in minutes of Buckingham MM.
Mathew Hughes, Jr. died intestate. His death likely was unexpected. The Bucks Co. Probate Court appointed his brother, George Hughes of Buckingham Twp. storekeeper, Charles Stewart of Plumstead Twp. yeoman, and Isaac Stewart of Warwick yeoman to administer the estate. The inventory was submitted ---- 1755; witnesses were Benjamin Chapman and Richard Gibbs and accepted in the court record ---- 1755.
Bucks County Orphan court records show that a petition was made in 1755 regarding the minor children of Mathew, Jr.The court appointed Thomas Watson, Titas Fell, and Robert Henderson who acted as guardians for the minor children from 1755 to after 1767.In 1764, Mathew Hughes (III) who was married by then and wished to take possession of his inheritance, his siblings and their guardians petitioned the court to divide the estate of their father; the court ordered this done in Dec. 1764.There was some controversy about the estate and the situation became complicated by the death of (and inheritance from) their grandfather, Mathew Hughes, Sr., in 1766, the death of their mother in 1767, and the death of their uncle, Uriah Hughes, Sr., brother of Mathew Hughes, Jr. in 1784 who administered the will of Mathew, Sr.
A map, drawn from a survey conducted the 27th and 28th of February 1765, of his realestate situated is Bucks and Plumbstead Twp.s shows that, at the time of his death, Mathew Hughes, Jr. owned the land previously occupied by his parents in the northeast corner of Buckingham Twp.The old house is still standing and is a substantial residence. It is situated just to the northwest the Carversville Road and Street Road intersection.Street Road appears on the inventory map and is still named that today.
NOTE:Elizabeth Stevenson's sister, Ann Stevenson, married William Biles (III), grandson of William Biles (b. 1644), who was also the grandfather of Mathew Hughes (Jr.).(i.e. the two Stevenson sisters married, respectively, Mathew Hughes (Jr.) and William Biles (III) who were first cousins; their children are first cousins on the Stevenson side and second cousins on the Hughes/Biles side.)
NOTE:The list of thier children is from Buckingham MM minutes found at the Bucks Co. Historical Society, Doylestown, PA; brithdates have been adjusted from O.S. (i.e. 1st month = March).Discrepancies may exist between these dates and other published records, but the dates given here are taken from the original Quaker minutes.
Notes for ELIZABETH STEVENSON:
Her birthdate was given as "31 January" by several secondary sources, and estimated to be "1712" by the genealogy of Thomas Stevenson of London England and his Decendants by John R. Stevenson, A.M., M. D.Her birth is not recorded at Middletown MM in Bucks Co.
Marriage Notes for MATHEW HUGHES and ELIZABETH STEVENSON:
From Middletown MM, Men's Minutes:
5th day, 2nd month, 1733 - Matthew Hughs, Junr., and Eliz: Stevenson intend to marry, he belonging to Falls monthly meeting.
7th day, 4th month, 1733 - Marriage of Matthew Hughs and Eliz: Stevenson accomplished 17th of 3rd month.
Children of MATHEW HUGHES and ELIZABETH STEVENSON are:
i. MATHEW23 HUGHES III, b. 3 March 1734, Buckingham Twp., Bucks Co., PA; d. Bef. 13 December 1810, Plumstead Twp., Bucks Co., PA; m. JANE; d. Aft. December 1810.
Notes for MATHEW HUGHES III:
Mathew Hughes (III) was the one who contested the will of his Uncle Uriah Hughes, Sr. in 1784.Mathew (III) claimed Uriah, Sr. was not of sound mind when the will was drawn and signatures were improper. There were many depositions submitted to the court regarding Uriah Hughes's state of mind before his will was signed.Mathew (III) lost the suit and the will of his uncle was proved.
ii. GEORGE HUGHES, b. 17 October 1735, Buckingham Twp., Bucks Co., PA; d. Aft. 1766.
Notes for GEORGE HUGHES:
George hughes is named at the executor, with his uncle, Uriah Hughes, Sr., of the will of his grandfather, Mathew hughes, Sr., probated in 1766.He received "all my lands lying contiguous to the mouth of (?"Tohikon") on both sides".That land is likely the same land in western Buckingham Twp. that Mathew, Sr. purchased between 1705 and the 1720s and may include the tract supposedly owned by "Uriah Hughes" in 1703.
iii. ELIZABETH HUGHES, b. 21 March 1738, Buckingham Twp., Bucks Co., PA; m. JOSHUA ELY, 22 November 1758.
iv. ISAAC HUGHES, b. 15 June 1740, BuckinghamTwp., Bucks Co., PA; d. Bef. 23 April 1803, near Hughesville, Loudoun Co., VA; m. MARY WARNE, Aft. 13 March 1764, Hunterdon Co., NJ; b. 25 July 1743, near Cranberry, NJ; d. Aft. 23 April 1803, near Hughesville, Loudoun Co., VA.
Notes for ISAAC HUGHES:
Isaac Hughes was born in Bucks Co., Pennsylvania 15 June 1740, the son of Mathew Hughes (Jr.) and Elizabeth Stevenson. His parents were Quakers and he was raised among Friends, though I have found no record of Isaac among Quaker records. Presumably, Isaac did not become a member of the Society of Friends -as he served in the American War for Independence and is buried at a Presbyterian Church- though his parents and some of his children were Quakers. His father died when he was 15 years old.
Isaac likely lived in Pennsylvania and New Jersey as a young man.A marriage license was issued 13 March 1764 in Huntington Co., New Jersey for Isaac Hughes and Mary "Warner" (sic Warne), daughter of George Warne and Abigail Warford, and the granddaughter of Thomas Warne, an original proprietor of East New Jersey.Isaac and Mary were living at Walnut Grove, Upper Marion Twp., Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania on 7 June 1777 as Isaac gave that address when he placed an advertisement in the Pennsylvania Evening Post to sell property described as "a Tract of Woodland in the Township of Walpac, Sussex Co., East Jersey, containing one-thousand acres, and part adjoining the Delaware River."
Isaac Hughes likely moved to Virginia by 1781.His family may or may not have accompanied him there during the war.He served in the American War for Independence as a private in Virginia and is recognized for his service by the Daughters of the American Revolution.Among his estate papers was found an honorable discharge dated 8 May 1781 which reads "I do hereby certify that Isaac Hues has produced an able bodied man to serve his tour of duty, & is hereby discharged. -Jno. Alexander, Lt. Col."*
The Hughes family was undoubtably in Loudoun Co., VA before 1784 or 1785 as Isaac's daughter, Abigail, married William Holmes of Goose Creek, Loudoun County at that time; Isaac's daughter, Elizabeth, married Joseph Holmes (brother of William), also of Goose Creek, in 1787.
Isaac leased a 200 acres farm from John Thrilkeld of Montgomery Co., Maryland. The lease agreement was for for 16 years and was signed 11 March 1789.Isaac Hughes purchased 250 acres in Loudoun Co. -likely including the original 200 leased- from John Thrilkeld for $350; the deed was signed 13 Nov. 1800.He built a stone house on the farm where the family lived until it was abandoned and his son, Isaac, who built a more stately residence. The property was sold out of the family by the widow of David Lee Hughes who moved to Texas after the War Between the States.
Isaac Hughes died intestate in 1803.His sons Warne and Isaac, Jr. were administrators of the estate and inventory was taken 23 April 1803.He is buried in the graveyard of the Presbyterian Church, Leesburg, Loudoun Co., Virginia where his wife also rests.Mary (Warne) Hughes died sometime after April 1803
NOTE: Lt. Col. John Alexander lived in Frederick (now Clarke) Co., VA; the army discharge was likely signed in VA.His grandnephew, Col. John H. Alexander, m. in 1874 Emma J Hughes, great-granddaughter of Isaac Hughes.
NOTE:His children and many of his ancestors included here can be found in "History of the Warne Family in America", by G. W. Labaw (1911), and are compiled therein as they are decendants of Thomas Warne, Proprietor of East New Jersey.Except for actual Warne decendants (as far as I know), that book is not totally reliable.
NOTE:There seems to have been a different Issac Hughes who moved to Virginia in 1772:1 June 1772.Isaac "Hughs" and children, Abner, Anna and Edward, received by Hopewell MM, VA on certificate from Guinedd MM, dated 26 Nov. 1771.(Hinshaw, Vol. VI, Hopewell MM, p. 405)

Notes for JOHN WILKINSON:
Lt. Col. John Wilkinson was an assemblyman and Justice of the Peace, born in Wrightstown, PA, a son of John and Grandson of Capt. Samuel Wilkinson of Rhode Island.
vi. SARAH HUGHES, b. 3 December 1744, Buckingham Twp., Bucks Co., PA.
vii. HUMPHREY HUGHES, b. 9 May 1747, Buckingham Twp., Bucks Co., PA.

Notes for THOMAS HUGHES:
His birthdate is recorded in Buckingham MM minutes as "the 10th day of the 1st month N.S.", thus denoting the change in numbering months from O.S. to N.S.
He left Bucks Co., PA for Maryland, and from there to Virginia.
His place in the Hughes family is noted nicely in Quaker records:
Thomas Hughes, received by Fairfax MM, VA on certificate from Gunpowder MM, MD 26 Sept. 1788 clear; son of Matthew and Elizabeth Hughes of Bucks Co., PA.He married 13 Jan. 1779 at Fairfax MH, Sarah Schooley (nee "Schuley"), daughter of John and Mary Schooley of Loudoun Co., VA.
(Hinshaw, Vol. VI, Fairfax MM, p. 513)
x. CONSTANTINE HUGHES, b. 8 September 1754, Buckingham Twp., Bucks Co., PA; d. 1823, Loudoun Co., VA; m. ELIZABETH JANNEY, 10 January 1782, Goose Creek MH, Loudoun Co., VA; b. Abt. 1761, Bucks Co., PA; d. 1823, Loudoun Co., VA.
Notes for CONSTANTINE HUGHES:
From the Minutes of Buckingham Monthy Meeting, Bucks Co., PA (photostatic copy located at the Bucks County Historical Society in Doylstown; transcribed by NMS 4 Dec. 2001):
"Constanine Hughs Certificate
"From the Monthly Meeting of Friends held at Buckingham in Pennsylvania the 2nd day of the 4th month 1781 to the Monthly Meeting of Friends held at Fairfax in Virginia.Dear Friends Constantine Hughs who hath some time past removed to settle within the compass of your Meeting hath requested our Certificate in order to join in membership with you these are therefor to certify you that the necessary enquiry hath been made concerning him and no other appears but that his life and conversation hath been in a degree orderly and hath attended our religious Meetings, hath settled his affairs to satisfaction and is clear of marriage engagements amongst us, therefore as a member of our Society we recommend him to your christian care and oversights desiring his growth in the truth and remain your Friends and Brethren.Sign'd in and on behalf of the Said Meeting by Robert Kirkbride, Clerk"
***
Constantine's marriage to the widow Elizabeth (Janney) Nichols and the marriage of his daughter, Mary, to Joseph Canby are recorded at Goose Creek MM, Loudoun Co., VA.
***
Most dates and decendants of Constantine Hughes (b. 1754) below come from Peg Hughes Hoffman of Des Moine, Iowa who is in possession of a Hughes family Bible.
In the cemetary where Constantine is buried, there are three stones: C Hughes, l823; E Hughes l823 and E Hughes l824 but that is all.
The date of Jan l0, l782 was in the Goose Creek minutes for the marriage and in the Bible records of his son as the son's birthdate, two reasonably reliable sources but it seems odd.
The inventory of Constantine's goods was dated April 30, l824 found in Will Book P (of Loudoun Co.),
page 4.It is just a listing of goods totaling $778.33.It includes a note on Thomas & Elias Hughes for $213.45, no relation mentioned; they may be his nephews, sons of his brother, Thomas.

Notes for ELIZABETH JANNEY:
Elizabeth married first Thomas Nichols in 1776; Fairfax MM minutes state she was married in "5th mo. last", and then state she was married out of union on 29 June 1776 (but that may be when the marriage was reported). She was disowned by Fairfax MM 27 July 1776 for marrying out of union; her acknowledgment was accepted and she was reinstated 25 Aug. 1781.She was widowed in or before 1781 and had no issue by her first marriage. She married second Constantine Hughes, son of Mathew Hughes, Jr. and Elizabeth Stevenson of Buckingham Twp., Bucks Co., PA, on 10 Jan. 1782 at Goose Greek MH, Loudoun Co., VA.
Marriage Notes for CONSTANTINE HUGHES and ELIZABETH JANNEY:
The date of 10 January 1782 is offered by Hinshaw, however, this same date is given as the birthdate of their son Constantine, Jr. so that marriage date may not be correct.I note that a liberation to marry generally was done shortly before a couple was married, and not nine months before --and there is just that:The birth of their son in January 1782, would have been exactly nine months after April 1781.I suspect they were acctually married in April 1781.
3.GEORGE22 HUGHES (MATHEW21, HUMPHREY20, HUMPHREY19 HEWES, HUMPHREY18 HEWIS, HUMPHREY17 HEWES, HUMPHREY16, JOHN15 HEWYSHE, OLIVER14 HYWISH, OLIVER13 HEWES, JOHN12 HYWISH, OLIVER11, GILBERT10 HEWES, RICHARD9 DE HYWIS, GEFFRY8, JOHN7, JOHN6, RICHARD5, WILLIAM DE4 LA HYWIS, RICHARD DE3, WILLIAM DE2 LA HEUSE, HUBERT DE1) was born Bet. 1700 - 1715 in Bucks Co., PA, and died Bef. 11 April 1795 in Buckingham Twp., Bucks Co., PA.He married ?JENNETT AUSTIN.
Notes for GEORGE HUGHES:
I estimate the birthdate of George Hughes before 1715 only because his mother, Elizabeth Biles Beakes, was born in 1670 and would have been 45 by 1715.George Hughes had one son, Amos Austin Hughes, who may have been under 21 when George wrote his will in 1783, so the son may have been born in the 1760s --if George was born before 1715, and had a son born in the 1760s, he would have been in his 40s or near 50 when he became a father.I have not found firm evidence who his wife was, but suspect she was the Jennett Austin named in his will, or a close relative of her.
George Hughes was one of the petitioners to administer the estate of his brother, Mathew Hughes, Jr. in 1755.
George Hughes, of Buckingham Twp., died before 14 April 1795 (when his will was proved). His estate was administered in Bucks Co. (#2600).
George made his will 15 Feb 1783.He left his stone home, all personal affects, and 50 acre farm where he lived to Jennett Austin* for her proper life, and afterward to his natural son, Amos Austin Hughes who also received realestate south of the Philadelphia Road (left to him by his father) and all of George's personal estate. He made a provision that if Amos Austin Hughes died before he was 21, or without issue**, that that portion of the estate was to go to the neice of George Hughes: Sarah Hughes, daughter of Elias Hughes. He left to his nephew, Mathew Hughes (son of Mathew Hughes, Jr.), 50 shillings of gold or silver.George appointed John Ely and John Large as executors.
* George Hughes never states in the will that Jennett Austin is his wife or the mother of Amos Austin Hughes; I would think that that was the relationship but it is not clear.
** This clause evidentally was overlooked when Amos Austin Hughes died in 1811 as he left no issue and the estate he inherited from his father was not passed to Sarah Hughes, dau. of Elias, as directed.
Marriage Notes for GEORGE HUGHES and ?JENNETT AUSTIN:
This couple may not have been married and Jennett may not have been the mother of Amos Austin Hughes.
Child of GEORGE HUGHES and ?JENNETT AUSTIN is:
i. AMOS AUSTIN23 HUGHES, b. Abt. 1773, Buckingham Twp., Bucks Co., PA; d. Bef. 21 December 1811, Buckingham Twp., Bucks Co., PA.
Notes for AMOS AUSTIN HUGHES:
I estimate his birth about 1773 only because of the provision in his father's will that addressed the possibility that Amos Austin Hughes could die before he was 21.(George Hughes wrote his will in 1793.) That would have made Amos Austin Hughes in his late 30s when he died in 1811; I suspect he was older than that and the provision in his father's will may have been a formality.
He apparently was not married and had no children. He was the creator and benefactor of the "Hughsian Free School."
Amos Austin Hughes, of Buckingham Two., left a will dated 21 Oct. 1807, proved 21 Dec. 1811 in Bucks Co. (#3770), an exerpt of which follows:
"Be it remembered that I, Amos Austin Hughes of the Township of Buckingham in the County of Bucks and Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Do make this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following.
"It is my will that all my realestate shall remain forever for the use of a free school.I therefore devise the plantation whereon I now reside containing ninety one acres ...to my executors ... in trust and special confidence ...I request and direct that my Friends John Ely, Nicholas Austin, John Watson, Jr., William Ely, Thomas Bye, John Wilson, M.D., Samuel Johnson, Joseph Shaw, Isaiah Jones, Joshua Anderson, Joseph Watson and Steven Wilson, all of the Township of Buckingham, ... [to] apply ... to the Legislature of this Commonwealth for a Charter of Incorporation establishing ... "The Hughesian Trustees and Directors of the Hughesian Free School."
He described in detail how his realestate rent should be used to raise capital to build and fund the school and for the administration fo the free school, and also to clothe and board students.
Amos Austin Hughes bequeathed to his housekeeper, Mary Paxton, the full occupancy of all his estate as long as she remained single, and that she could use rents from the realestate without committing waste or suffering damage. He also gave to her some furniture, all kitchen items, a gold ring and $1,000.
He gave to Hannah Ely, wife of John Ely, $2,000.
He gave to Nicholas Austin, $2,000.
He directed his executors to set aside $2,000 and pay the interest of that sum to Elizabeth Harrold, wife of Willaim Harrold during her natural life. The principle, $2,000, was to be paid to the Trustees of the Hughesian School after her decease.
He gave to Sarah Bennett*, wife of Isaac Bennett, his silver watch and $500.
He gave to Samuel Ely, $800; and to his brother, Thomas Ely, $400.
He gave to Amos Bennett, son of Isaac Bennett, $300; and to his sister, Lucretia Bennett, $200.
He gave to Samuel Hughes and George Hughes**, each $50.
He gave to Amos Hughes Large, Amos Hughes Dean, and Amos Hughes Roberts, each $30.
He gave to Joseph Broadhurst, all of his clothing and $100; and to his sister, Rachel Broadhurst, furniture.
He directs his exectutors to give the remaining portion of his estate to the Trustees of the Hughesian School, describes the tract of land that shall be the site of the school, and names his executors: Samuel Gillingham, Samuel Ely, and Thomas Ely.
* Sarah Bennet might be Sarah (Hughes), daughter of Elias Hughes.
**It is likely that Samuel Hughes here named is the same Samuel (b. 1781), and that George Hughes is the same George (b. 1785), both sons of John and Eleanor Hughes of Buckingham Twp.
4.ELIAS22 HUGHES (MATHEW21, HUMPHREY20, HUMPHREY19 HEWES, HUMPHREY18 HEWIS, HUMPHREY17 HEWES, HUMPHREY16, JOHN15 HEWYSHE, OLIVER14 HYWISH, OLIVER13 HEWES, JOHN12 HYWISH, OLIVER11, GILBERT10 HEWES, RICHARD9 DE HYWIS, GEFFRY8, JOHN7, JOHN6, RICHARD5, WILLIAM DE4 LA HYWIS, RICHARD DE3, WILLIAM DE2 LA HEUSE, HUBERT DE1) was born Bet. 1700 - 1715 in Bucks Co., PA, and died Abt. 1792 in Buckingham Twp., Bucks Co., PA.He married REBECCA WRIGHT 6 September 1746 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., PA.
Notes for ELIAS HUGHES:
Elias had at least two daughter: Sarah Hughes, who is named in the will of her Uncle George Hughes; and Elizabeth, wife of Robert Smith, who is named in the will of her Uncle Uriah Hughes, Sr.He also had a son, "Uriah Hughes, Jr." who was named in the will of Mathew Hughes, Sr. as such, and was the executor of his uncle Uriah Hughes' will.
Elias Hughes, of Buckingham Twp., died in or before 1792 when his estate was administered. He left no will.
Since he may have lived for a time in Burlington, New Jersey (where his wife and daughters appear in the minutes of Burlington MM), he may be the same Elias Hughes who advertised realestate for sale in Burlington, described as "two lots, each 50 feet front on High-street, and extending the same width back 609 feet, to Wood-street....Also one other lot of 36 feet from, on said hugh-street, and extending back the same width, to Wood-street aforesaid ...Also one other lot fronting said Wood-street, near 86 feet, and extends back 380 feet ..."They were to be "sold by the subscriber at public venue, on the 11th day of April next at the house of Lambert Barnes, inn holder in the city of Burlington ..."(Pensylvania Gazette, No. 1892.28 March 1765 --from New Jersey Colonial Documents, Newspaper Extracts, Vol. XXIV, p. 509; located at Freehold, NJ)
Notes for REBECCA WRIGHT:
She is likely the "Rebecca (Hughs)" who was condemned by Burlington MM, NJ for marrying contrary to doctrine on 1st day, 10th month (Dec.) 1746.
Children of ELIAS HUGHES and REBECCA WRIGHT are:
i. ELIZABETH23 HUGHES, b. 6 November 1746, Buckingham Twp., Bucks Co., PA; d. 13 November 1820, Bucks Co., PA; m. ROBERT SMITH, 21 March 1770, Bucks Co., PA; b. 22 May 1749, Bucks Co., PA.
Notes for ELIZABETH HUGHES:
Elizabeth was named in the will of her grandfather, Mathew hughes, Sr, dated 1766 as daughter of Elias. She was also named in the will of her uncle, Uriah Hughes, Sr., executed in 1784, as a daughter of Elias Hughes, and wife of Robert Smith.
She likely is the same, "Elizabeth Hughes, daughter of Elias and Rebecca Hughes", who was granted gertificate to transfer from Burlington MM, Burlington Co., NJ to Buckingham MM, Bucks Co., PA on the 9th day, 1st month, 1766.
ii. URIAH HUGHES, b. Abt. 1756, Buckingham Twp., Bucks Co., PA; d. 1834, Athens Co., OH; m. PHEBE SHAW, 21 August 1784, German Reform Church, Philadelphia, PA; b. of Plumbstead Twp., Bucks Co., PA; d. Aft. 1799, of Athens Co., OH.
Notes for URIAH HUGHES:
Uriah Hughes, Jr. is named in the will of his grandfather, Mathew Hughes, Sr. as son of Elias.
He was the executor of the estate of his uncle, Uriah hughes, Sr., his and received all realestate of Uriah Hughes prior to his death in 1784, with an arrangement mentioned in Uriah, Sr.'s will.
He is more than likely the same Uriah Hughes who removed to Tinicum, Bucks Co.He married Phebe (Shaw) Kennard, dau. of Joseph Shaw of Plumbstead Twp.The will of his father-in-law, Joseph Shaw, was proved 10 March 1799 (Bucks Co. Will Book No. 6, p. 181) and named Uriah Hughes of Tinicum and Jonathan Shaw of Plumbstead as executors.Joseph Shaw also named his daughter, Phebe Hughes as an heir, among others.Letters annexed to the will state Uriah Hughes had "removed to a distance" and new executors were appointed: James Shaw and John Lewis.
Uriah Hughes likely removed somewhere else in Pennsylvania (perhaps Bedford Co.) and then to Athens Co., OH where he died in 1834.
Apparently, Uriah married second, perhaps late in life, to a woman named Rebecca Hunner.
Notes for PHEBE SHAW:
She apparently married first, James Kennard and supposedly had two children: Mary (b. 1782) and John (b. 1783) Kennard, before being widowed and marrying Uriah Hughes.
I have seen the wife of James Kennard (abt. 1720-1777) claimed to be an "Alice Jolley" and that they had eight children together, and that Alice is the widow who married second Uriah hughes. The records of the German Reform Church of Philadelphia show that is not so.
Marriage Notes for URIAH HUGHES and PHEBE SHAW:
Their marriage was solemnized by the Rev. Casper Weyburg. Her first married name, Kennard, has been mistranscribed as "Rennard" in published records of the German Reform Church of Philadelphia.
iii. SARAH HUGHES, b. Aft. 1762, Buckingham Twp., Bucks Co., PA.
Notes for SARAH HUGHES:
I estimate her birth year to be after 1762 only from the fact that the will of Mathew Hughes, Sr., dated 1762, names two children of Elias Hughes: Elizabeth and Uriah as the heirs of Mathew, Sr. after the death of Elias. Was Sarah simply omitted, or was she not born yet?It seems strange to me that he would word the bequeath as he did: "... to be devided equally between his two children, Elizabeth and Uriah", if Elias had another child at the time.Other grandchildren are not named specifically, and so that may be the case here, whereby the estimated birthdate has no basis.
She is named specifically as the daughter of Elias in the will of her uncle, George Hughes, probated in 1795.In the event that Amos Austin Hughes (first-cousin to Sarah, the subject here) died before he was 21 or without issue, the whole estate of George Hughes should pass to her.Amos Austin Hughes, only natural son of George hughes, died in 1811 without issue.Perhaps Sarah preceeded him in death or this clause of George's will was overlooked as Amos Austin Hughes left most of his estate to create the Hughesian Free School. It is also possible she nullified the requirement of the bequeath.
Sarah MIGHT be the Sarah Bennett, wife of Isaac Bennett, named in the will of Amos Austin Hughes (no relationship specified).Amos left Sarah Bennett his silver watch and $500.Amos A. Hughes also gave to Amos Bennett $300, and to Amos' sister, Lucretia Bennett, $200, both named as children of Isaac and Sarah Bennett.
