I received a report from the researcher (Regina Koppe) I was working with in Germany. It has a lot of information for those of us related to the Page County, Iowa Herzog family, and answers the question in my original post!
My great-great-great grandfather, Friedrich (actually, Johann Friedrich) Herzog was married twice - first to my ggggrandmother, Catharina Elisabeth Im Sande, and after she died of tuberculosis in 1849 to Margarethe Elisabeth Rippe from Martfeld. My gggrandmother, Rebecka Dorothea Elisabeth Herzog, was the only child born of Catharina Elisabeth nee Im Sande. This was the first time I had any information on Catharine - I knew that my Rebecka Dorothea Elisabeth had 2 half sisters, but she was raised by Margarethe Elisabeth nee Rippe and that was the only mother she knew. Was I ever thrilled to find another branch of my family!!!
Catharine Elisabeth Im Sande was from Barme, and was the daughter of Albert Heinrich Im Sande from Wechold and Margarethe Elisabeth Hegeholz from Barme. They were married 30 Oct 1801 in Doerverden and had 12 children (10 of whom lived).Regina Koppe found names and birthdates of 11 of the 12 children; my Catharine Elisabeth was the youngest child.
For the record, Margarethe Elisabeth Rippe's parents were Johann Christian Rippe (deceased before the marriage in 1850) and Margareta Schmidt (also deceased by 1850).Johann Friedrich Herzog and Margarethe Elisabeth Rippe had a stillborn son in 1851, and 2 daughters (Elizabeth Margaret and Margarethe Dorothea).
Ms. Koppe found Johann Friedrich Herzog's parents - Ludwig Herzog, who was a pension corporal, and Dorothea Meyer.Ludwig was from Bergzaben, Alsace, and was born about 1773, died 11 April 1822 of weakness and growth (cancer?).Dorothea Meyer was born about 1779 and died 4 July 1823 of "chest illness."Our Johann Friedrich was an only child, and was orphaned at age 6.We don't know who raised him, but he was confirmed in the Wechold ev-Luth. church in 1832.
I don't have any information past that.I was very pleased with the work Regina Koppe (of Historical Research Services - http://www.hist.de/http://www.hist.de/ ) did and may have her do some more research into Dorothea's parents.Since Ludwig came from Alsace (not the Hanover area), Regina referred me to another researcher if I want more information on his family.
I have German census information on the Herzog family in Wechold.I also have a lot of information on the Herzberg families, including German census information from Hoyerhagen.
