Bartholomew HERRINGTON was one of the pioneer settlers of Jefferson County, Missouri. While that area was under Spanish dominion a few Americans settled there, taking land grants from the Spanish, of which Bartholomew was one. At his website Fredric Z. Saunders, a knowledgeable researcher on the HERRINGTON family of this area, lists the children of Bartholomew. The 7th child is "Jane", seemingly born after 1788 (by placement in the list), for whom no marriage information is given. Living nearby, according to available records, was the HILDERBRAND family, also one of those crossing over the river prior to 1803. Jonathan HILDERBRAND, born ca 1780's was the son of John HILDERBRAND, the first non-Latin settler of Missouri, according to Houck. In the 1960's I was doing my initial research on my ancestry. Bartholomew HILDERBRAND, son of Jonathan, is my 3great grandfather. A grandaunt of mine provided me with a lot of information on the family. When I inquired of the name of Bartholomew's mother I was told, "I do not know, but I believe she was a HERRINGTON". Jonathan HILDERBRAND was married later in life to Sarah WICKERHAM, indicating that he had been widowed at some time. Two or more times I contacted persons reputed to be key researchers on the HERRINGTON family of Jefferson county. In each instance I was told that there is no connection. Last summer I was able to personally view early deed records of Jefferson county. On deeds signed by Jonathan prior to his marriage to Sarah the name of his wife was given as "Jane". As there were so few families residing in Jefferson county prior to the time that Jonathan and Jane would have reached marriageable age, I believe that this is strong evidence to indicate that his wife was Jane HERRINGTON.
