Ref why does the dorset wiltshire branch have hedditchs unlike the headaches of berkshire.
My grandmother, Frances Helen Herridge/Hedditch,(used both - not at the same time-)of Gillingham we always thought that this was because the father registered the boys and could read, whilst mother registered the girls, and the registrar could not understand the wessex dialect.Whilst this might have been true in the 19th century in the 17 and 18th many of the men were illiterate too.
Nan always maintained that the 'correct name' was Heddtich, and this was gradually changed to Herridge(we lost much oral family history in the 20th century).

My godfather did some research over 30 years ago, and had some information prior to 1600, sadly that was lost when he passed away, but I do have lists he made post 1600, certainly it appears from these lists that in the 17th century there were more Hedditchs/Heddige than Herridge in Gylla. I need to re-organise the data in the lists, so they can be easily read.
I have a question; has anyone found a link between the Berks Herridges and the Dorset Wilts ones?
