DeLAND - Don J. Hermann, 88, of DeLand died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2006, at his home.
He was born Dec. 21, 1917, in Havana, the son of Edward and Freda Kellersman Hermann. He married Dorothy E. McBride in 1946 in DeLand; she died in 1997. He married Elberta Morse in 1998.
Mr. Hermann was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during World War II. He attended Midstate College of Commerce in Peoria in 1937 and 1938 and Illinois Wesleyan University in 1948 and 1949. He also attended banking schools at Southern Illinois University, Northwestern University and the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He was a bookkeeper for Fairview Farmers Elevator from 1938 to 1941. He later audited grain elevators in Bloomington. He worked for Bank of Illinois in Champaign from 1973 until he retried as vice president in the trust department in 1985.
He was a member of DeLand United Methodist Church, where he served as chairman of the official board and finance committee and on the Board of Trustees and as church treasurer. He was a member of the Zoning Board of Piatt County, DeLand-Weldon School Board, Board of DeLand State Bank and the DeLand American Legion. He was director of DeLand Co-op Grain Co. and trustee of DeLand Carnegie Library.
Survivors: wife, Elberta of Savoy; son, Kenneth Hermann of DeLand; two daughters, Janet Galaras of Savoy and Susan Hermann of DeLand; two stepdaughters, Louann Fisher of Savoy and Linda Wind of Cary, N.C.; six grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; sister, Mabel Stier of Petersburg; and brother, Gene Hermann of Havana.
Services: 10 a.m. Monday, Trigg & Calvert Chapel, DeLand, the Rev. Donald Walden officiating. Interment: DeLand Cemetery.
