I think that we are looking at the same Herman family. My ggrandmother could be a sister of your David HERMAN.Here is what I am working with:
Elizabeth HERMAN b:26 Aug 1835 PA, m: 24 Apr 1855 in Logan Mills(not far from Sugar Valley), Clinton Co. to John ROBBINS; Father, Michael HERMAN, b: abt 1800 (per 1870 census, taken at Westport, Clinton Co. PA.)and mother Christiana (don't have a last name for her). Note that Michael and Christiana HERMAN are living next to John and Elizabeth ROBBINS in Westport in 1870.If Stella May HERMAN was born in Westport, this puts your David there at just the right time. Westport was a very small village (it still is).Elizabeth had a sister Mary (b: abt 1844) who married Charles Noyes in Westport.
David HERMAN was a private in the Civil War; 137th Regiment, Co. C.He mustered out on June 1, 1863.You might be able to get some more info on him through his war records.
I'm not sure yet, but I'm working on connecting my gggrandfather Michael HERMAN with the HERMANs of Penn and Haines Townships in Centre Co. (just across the Clinton Co. line). There was a Michael HERMAN(possibly the father of my Michael)in Haines twp tax list in 1797.
Hope that this might help.I'll keep you posted. If anyone else out there has any connection, please let me know.
