Herman(n) Family Lake County, IN, 1869-1892
I am reserching my great-grandmother, who was raised by another family. I am looking for information on her birth family. Here are the facts I have to date:
Emma M. Hermann was born 24th June 1890 in Indiana.
She was raised by Fred & Wilhelmina "Mina" Seims (Seems, Siems) in Eagle Creek, Lake County, IN.She is listed as an adopted daughter in the family on the 1900 census, but as a niece on the 1910 census. She married my great-grandfather Harry G. Abramson on 5th August 1913. Mina was later listed as an "aunt" of Emma's on the 1920 census.
I have found the grave of a Mary Hermann, whom I believe to possibly be Emma's birth mother, in the Historic Maplewood Cemetery in Crown Point, IN.The headstone reads:
Mary Hermann, daughter of Henry and (illegible name).
Born 11 March 1869, Died 28 October 1892.
Also buried with Mary is a child (her son probably):
Edgar Otto Hermann
Born 27 June 1892, Died 28 October 1892. (Same day as Mary died!) Edgar was 4 months old.
Emma would have been 2 1/2 years old at the time Mary died, which is why I think Mary is her mother. I do not know when Emma went to be with the Seims family, but it was sometime before 1900.The wherabouts of the father is unknown, as well as his name, or if he tried to raise Emma for awile.
Again, there may be a familial link between the Hermann and Seims families, as they were both German and because of the "niece" and "aunt" notations on the censuses.
ANY INFORMATION WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!
Thank you,
Erica Lancaster
**I am posting this in all Herman, Herrman, and Hermann forums because all three forms of the name were used when the immigrants came to the U.S. All three forms of the name were used on documentation for Emma, so different branches of the same family may have used a variation of the name. The use of "Hermann" is most common for Emma and Mary.
