Fergus Falls Daily Journal 2/28/1949 Pg 9 - "NASHUA (Special) - Fire destroyed the seven room, two story home on the Henry Herman farm three miles north and two miles east of Nashua. Older residents remember the place as the Charles Hosford farm. Mr. and Mrs. Herman and their son, Durlyn, were in Breckenridge at the time, and Gary, the fourteen year old son was at home alone. He had just stepped into the basement to get ready to do the afternoon chores at about 4:20. Suddenly there was a terrific explosion. Just what exploded he could not say, although he thought it might have been the bottle g_____ water heater. He rushed upstaires to give the general alarm over the telephone but dense smoke prevented him reaching the phone. He then got the tractor and drove as rapidly as possible to the Harry Donnaly farm, half mile away and put in a call for help. People from the adjoining countryside turned up to fight the fire and the Wendell fire department answered the call. The house burned to the ground in 25 minutes. The snowplow had to be called out to open the farm road from the highway before the fire department could reach the farmyard. Volunteers assisted in putting snow and water on the granary, the nearest building so as to save it. The only articles saved from the burning dwelling were a davenport, desk, cedar chest, and a few chairs. The family lost everything else excepting the clothing they were wearing.
Mrs. Carl Albert (Iris Herman) who lives in Tintah called her sister, who is employed in Breckenridge and the latter located her parents and brother, telling them of the fire. They arrived home as the house was reduced to a pile of debris. Mr. and Mrs. Herman are staying with their son Glen in Campbell and the two other sons with their sister in Tintah, where they attend school. Recently Glen Herman bought the farm across the road from his father's place and put in a basement. As soon as the basement can be fitted up for living......." I don't have the rest of the article.
