Is your information about the Northumberland area Herdman's from the UK? Did you ever see the name spelled Hardman? In our Herdman genealogical research I'm presently at a dead end with Michael Herdman/Hardman from early census/death records in Essex County, NJ, where the name is spelled variously and one of the records indicates that Michael came from Germany prior to the Revolution. I'm aware from my international travel that Herdman is considered both a British and German surname, although not terribly common in either country.

Best Regards,
David Herdman
