Herbert/Harbert/Harbourt of VA and Oldham/Shelby Co KY
Posted by: Maureen Harbourt (ID *****5385) Date: March 15, 2007 at 16:56:46
  of 1562

Thomas Harbourt/Harbert b. ~1786 Loudoun Co VA d. aft. 1860 Shelby Co. Ky, moved to KY along with his son Dr. Wilson W. Harbourt and daughter Mary "Martha" Harbourt, between 1830 and 1837. They came first to Oldham, then went to Shelby Co, adjacent to Oldham Co. There they joined Thomas's older sister's family, Joanna Harbourt Helm & her husband John Helm Jr.

Thomas and Joanna were children of Peter Harbourt, Sr. b. 1744 Monmouth Co. NJ, d. 1802 Berkeley Co. VA and his wife Mary b. bef 1765, d. aft 1810, her surname unknown. Peter Sr. left a will naming his daughter Mary [Joanna] Helm, and his sons John, Thomas, Paul & wife Margaret [Kenester], and Peter Jr. and wife Catherine [surname unknown]. Peter Sr. came from NJ to Loudoun Co. VA in the early 1770's and is on tax lists there through the 1770's and 80's. He purchased abt 400 acres of land on Third Hill Mtn. and drains of Sleepy Creek in 1799 [Library of Virginia, Northern Neck land grants].

After her father died, Joanna Harbourt Helm & her husband and children moved to Jefferson Co. Ky. They had 5 children b. in Frederick Co. Va [where the Helm's lived]: Peter, John Jr., Meredith, Mary "Polly", and Thomas, and 5 born once they got to KY: Zylpha and Samuel (twins), William, Joanna, and Sarah.

Joanna Harbourt's brother Paul Harbourt & wife Margaret sold their land in VA inherited from their father in abt 1814-1820. They moved to Jefferson Co KY and were there on the 1820 census. They moved to Harrison Co IN in 1827 and were among the founding members of the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church there.

Joanna's brother John was on the 1810 census in Berkeley Co VA apparently living with his mother, a female over 45. I lose track of him after that.

Joanna's brothers Peter Jr. and Thomas were on the 1820 and 1830 census records of Morgan Co VA [part of Berkeley where they lived became Morgan Co in 1820]. Both of them left before 1840. Thomas & his son Wilson and daughter Mary came to KY, not sure if his wife died before or after that, but she is on 1830 census and not 1840. Peter Jr. and his family moved to Jefferson Co. Ohio.

According to Oldham Co. KY marriage records, an Amos Hall married Joanna Helm, daughter of Joanna Harbourt Helm/John Helm on January 11, 1830. On the marriage bond, Amos's father was identified as Samuel Hall. Amos and Joanna had a daughter b. abt 1831 and a son b. abt 1834 . Then Joanna, Amos's first wife died and in 1837, in neighboring Shelby Co, Ky, Amos married Mary Harbourt. Mary was b. abt 1818 and died aft. 1880. As stated, she was the daughter of Thomas Harbourt. Amos and Mary Harbourt Hall had these children: William Morton, Eliza C., Thomas H., James Albert, Sarah A., and Laura V.

Samuel Hall, father of the Amos who married into the Harbourt family, lived very near the Harbourts in Virginia.
In 1809, Samuel Hall bought land in Hampshire Co. VA, on the drains of the Great Capacon [Library of VA, Northern Neck Land Grants]. In 1810, he is on the census of Hampshire Co VA 26-45, wife 16-26 and one m. 0-10 [Amos]. In 1820, that part of Hampshire Co, as well as the part of Berkeley Co. where the Harbourt's property was, became part of Morgan Co. VA. On the 1820 Census of Morgan Co. VA, Samuel Hall 26-45, wife same, 1 m 10-16 [Amos} 1 m 0-10, 2 f. 0-10. They lived very close to Thomas Harbourt 26-45, wife same, 1 m. 0-10 [this was Wilson W. Harbourt], 1 f. 0-10 [Mary aka "Martha"]. Next to Thomas was his brother, Peter Harbourt Jr. 26-45, wife same [Catherine], and 5 sons 0-10 [believe them to be Thomas [maybe], John W.[sure], Israel [maybe], Ambrose Clark [sure], and Cromwell Orrick [sure]Harbourt].

On the 1830 US Census, Peter Harbert and Thomas Harbert are still in Morgan Co VA, but Samuel Hall is not. We know at least that his son, Amos, had already moved to Oldham Co KY as he was married there. In Oldham Co KY, at that time, John Helm Jr. & his wife Joanna & family and a number of Hall's, but no Samuel or Amos. In Oldham Co. were the following Halls: Elijah [b. 1770-1780] & family on the same page as the Helms, Edward, Francis, James, john, 2 Josephs, and Zachariah. Just across the border in Shelby Co., there was a "widow S.L. Hall". There was also another Amos Hall b. 1790-1800 living close to [within 1 or 2 census pages] Moses Hall, Reuben Hall, Wyatt Hall, and William Hall. Further away was Allen Hall and another John Hall. I did not check Jefferson Co. KY.
