Maureen, I can't add directly to your VA posts, but will share this with you. The info is from the book "A History of St Jerome Fancy Farm, KY" -- St Jerome is the Catholic Church in Fancy Farm, Graves Co KY.

This is my line: "James Austin born 1770 near Harper's Ferry VA, md. Ann Howard. They came to Cartright's Creek, Washington Co KY in 1790. Moved to Union Co in 1832. His son, Ambrose, born in 1804, married MARY ANN HERBERT in 1827." There is further info about the other children of James and Ann Austin. The St Jerome's book is entirely about the Catholic families of Graves Co KY and surrounding counties. There is no further info about the Herbert family in the St Jerome's book.

The Cath families migrated from St Mary's Co MD in about 1780 or so to Nelson Co KY (became Washington Co KY, also were in Marion Co KY), then many of them moved on west to the Graves/Carlisle/Ballard counties area.

I have found some of the Catholic family names in Charles Co MD early -- for instance, my direct ancestors Thomas Summers md. Mary Ann Brawney/Brawner in 1779 in Charles Co. The Summers line intermarried with the Catholic families. There are also some of these families in Prince Charles Co MD

I have information that Mary Ann Herbert's father was Jeremiah Herbert . . I'm in pursuit of documentation of that information.

Good luck on your research.

Linda
