Who are the Henthorns?

Brothers James and John Henthorn seem to be the first Henthorns who came to this country. Tradition holds that they came from Ireland. This remains to be proven. Most Henthorns in the United States descend from these two men. I also believe that all Hinthorn(e)s in this country are descendants of this family.

However, there are other Henthorn families in this country. My own family came from the area of Oldham, Crompton and Shaw in Lancaster county England in the 1850s. These places are in the northeast corner of what is today greater Manchester, England. There are Henthorns still living in the area.

I know of at least one Henthorn male, from England, who arrived in this country in recent years. There is another family group that a researcher in England reports being in this country. We have yet to find them. This may be due to the fact that some Henthorns don't chose to respond when contacted.
