Bill has found an excellent site that helps explain how DNA can be used in determining common ancestry.
Unfortunately, only two people have expressed interestin using this tool to date. Perhaps its time has not yet come.
Even though this does not relate to my direct lineage, I was hoping the descendants of the Hensons related to Thompson M. Henson's 1858 letter about the seven brothers would be interested in getting the project going.
The more expensive genetic test, around $200, looks like it can provide pretty good results going back about eight generations. Depending on the age of the DNA donar, this could help verify Henson family relationships back to the mid 1740s which is very close to when one Philip Henson arrived in Virginia in 1735.
It probably won't be as accurate for descendants of the Hensons and Hinsons who migrated from Bermuda and Barbados in the late 1600s but it should still help somewhat.
