Frank Higgins, 70, 130 Elliott Avenue, Erwin, TN, died
Sunday, August 2, 2009, in the Unicoi County Memorial
Hospital. He was a life long resident of Unicoi County and
the son of the late Mark and Ida Hensley Higgins.
Mr. Higgins retired after 40 years of service from the
Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. Mr. Higgins along
with his wife Barbara owned and operated Franks Furniture
in Erwin since 1989. He was in the United States Marine
Corp Reserves for six years. Mr. Higgins was of the
Christian Faith. He was a 1958 graduate of Unicoi County
High School who had perfect attendance all twelve years
including elementary school. Mr. Higgins was a charter
member of the Erwin Rescue Squad for over 20 years where
he had served on the board of directors. He was a member
of Southside Volunteer Fire Department for over 20 years
and was a two time recipient of the member of the year
award. Mr. Higgins had also served on the Board of
Directors for Southside Volunteer Fire Department. Other
than his parents Mr. Higgins was preceded in death by a
son Kevin Higgins in 1994.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Barbara Simmons
Higgins; one son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Valerie
Higgins, Erwin, TN; two brothers and one sister-in-law,
Ralph Higgins and Alvin and Alta Higgins all of Erwin, TN;
three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Ann McIntosh,
Patricia and C. H. McKinney all of Erwin, TN, and Stella
and Fred Horning, Johnson City, TN; one granddaughter who
was his 'Little Buddy' Peyton Higgins; and several nieces,
nephews, cousins and friends.
The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.,
Tuesday, at the funeral home and other times at the
residence 130 Elliott St. Erwin.
Funeral services for Mr. Higgins will be held Tuesday,
August 4, 2009, at 8 p.m., from the Erwin Memorial Funeral
Home Chapel. Reverend Garland James will officiate. Music
will be provided by Harold Luttrell and Ollie Ledford.
Members of the Southside Volunteer Fire Department will
serve as pallbearers.
Committal service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday,
August 5, 2009, in Evergreen Cemetery. Family, minister,
pallbearers and friends are requested to assemble at the
funeral home by 10:15 a.m., Wednesday to go in procession
to the cemetery.
