Robert Henry Biography
I hope it is OK to post this here.
My biography of Robert Henry of Kings Mountain fame, "Robert Henry - A Western Carolina Patriot", is now available in Asheville bookstores and online at Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Published by The History Press, it has 192 pages and over 70 photos, maps and illustrations. I put years of research into this book and feel it is the only complete account of Robert’s life.
From the back cover:
"Robert Henry is a character more suited for fiction than nonfiction. While just a boy, he fought with the Overmountain Men at Kings Mountain and battled British troops along the Catawba River. As a surveyor, he helped mark the boundary line between Tennessee and North Carolina. He had a long career as a prominent attorney and owned the famous Sulphur Springs resort. Yet while Henry is one of western North Carolina's most accomplished ancestors, he is also one of the most eccentric. He preferred to dress in moccasins and traveled with a walking stick nearly as tall as he. Some said he had the gift of foresight and was able to predict his own death. Join author Richard Russell as he navigates the unusual, contradictory and fascinating life of Robert Henry."
Some reviews:
“I enjoy, and especially love when I find an author has filtered primary sources and written well about his or her subject . . . Our gratitude goes to Richard Russell, who has ably and gracefully given us Robert Henry, an extraordinary man, pretty well unvarnished.” - Wayne Caldwell, author of Cataloochee and Requiem by Fire
“Embarrassed, I reluctantly admit that even though I pride myself on a 30-year addiction to WNC history, I was not familiar with Robert Henry. Now that I've "met" him, my education is more complete. Thoroughly researched and well-written, Mr. Russell records the incredible life story of a successful, but colorful character in western NC during the early to mid-1800's. Not only is the book a valuable contribution to the preservation of WNC history, but Robert Henry himself, I believe, would be pleased.” - Marci Spencer, author of Clingmans Dome, Highest Mountain in the Great Smokies
“Richard Russell has compiled an intriguing account of the western Carolinas’ Henry family, sharing new insight concerning the Battle of Kings Mountain and perhaps the only published account on the Battle of Cowan’s Ford. Hence forward, in passing “the old Henry place” in Henderson County’s Crab Creek Valley, I shall carry with me newfound wisdom and a rejuvenated respect for its forebears.” - Terry Ruscin, researcher/photographer and author of Hidden History of Henderson County, North Carolina and Hendersonville and Flat Rock - An Intimate Tour
“A fascinating, well researched account of Robert Henry, his family and the early days of the Sulphur Springs. In addition, Russell was able to relate Henry’s complex legal battles in an easily understandable form.” - J. L. Mashburn, author of Hominy Valley - The Golden Years; Hominy Valley - Revisited and Asheville and Buncombe County - Once Upon a Time
