August Henkle/Henkel/Heine (b. 1840 Germany)

I am trying to locate information on my great grandfather, August Henkle/Henkel, who came to this country between 1850 and 1870. He was from Kassel. The family story has it that his father gave him money to flee the German inscription for military service as his 2 older brothers had already died in military service. August changed his surname to Heine, after the German poet Heinrich Heine, boarded a train and left for some port to come to America. He was born in August of 1840 according to his death records in St. Louis, Missouri. I've tried to locate German records for Kassel but have been informed that most of them no longer exist because of the heavy bombing of that area during World War 2. Any help would be appreciated.
