Lelan (Papa) Hendry
Died: 03-14-2003 Leland "Papa” Hendry, 87, of Rockford, Ill., formerly of Greeneville, died Friday at the home of his granddaughter, Teresa Smith, and her family.
He was born Oct. 7,1915, in Greeneville and was a son of the late George and Ella Early Hendry.
He married the former Lois Pearline Ragsdale in Gate City, Va., on June 30, 1936. She died Aug. 7, 1991.
Mr. Hendry retired from Quaker Oats Corp. after 15 years of service.
His family noted that “Papa” loved spending time with his grandchildren and enjoyed gardening and having breakfast at Kmart.
Survivors include a son: Gerald Hendry Sr. of Tennessee; a daughter-in-law: Genevieve Hendry of Rockford; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and a brother and sister-in-law: Charles and Kathleen Hendry of Rockford.
He was preceded in death by a son, Gene Hendry and by brothers and sisters.
A funeral service will be held at 1 o’clock Monday in Rockford at Sundberg Funeral Home, 215 N. Sixth St., Rockford.
The family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m. Wednesday at Jeffers Mortuary.
The funeral service will follow visitation at 11 o’clock in the mortuary chapel. The Rev. Gary Norton will officiate.
Interment will be in Cross Anchor Cemetery
