I have documentd my Queens ancestors back to John and Rosetta Thurston Hendrickson, my 2g Grandparents (1781-1870+). I am seeking their parents. John Hendrickson was born about 1781, most probably in Fosters Meadow, now Valley Stream/Elmont, then Queens County, NY. Rosetta Thurston was born about 1793. These dates based on 1850 census enumerations. John and Rosetta were married June 6, 1806 by Justice of the Peace John Simmons in Cow Bay, Queens County (now Manhasset, Nassau County) NY. They are believed to have returned to Fosters Meadow after their marriage because they are not enumerated in the 1810 census of the Town of North Hempstead. In 1814, John was drafted into Captain Townsends New York Militia of Oyster Bay, NY. He served two months working on the fortifications of Fort Green overlooking what was to become the U.S.Naval Yard in Brooklyn NY, now defunct. In 1820, a John Hendrickson is enumerated in the 1820 Federal Census if Town of Hempstead, Queens Co NY as a 26-45 year old male (my John would have been 39) with a female (wife) age 26-45 (Rosetta would have been 27) and a son age 10-16. In 1830, A John Hendrickson is enumeratedin the Federal Census of the Ton of Hempstead, age 40-49 (John would have been 49), a wife age 30-30 (Rosetta would have been 37); 5 children were also enumerated spanning four age groups. In 1836, John and Rosetta sold a farm in Fosters Meadow and removed to Brooklyn/Williamsburg where he served as a marketman. In 1847-1850, John and Rosetta are listed in the Brooklyn City Directories living in the Williamsburg area. In 1850, John and Rosetta are enumerated in the Federal census of Brooklyn's 7th Ward with three children: Samuel, age 22 (born 1828), Rosetta, age 19,( born 1831), son William, age 16 (born 1834). The other children enumerated in the 1830 census are believed to have left the household. In 1852, John received a certificate for 40 acres of land in Dubuque, Iowa under the Bounty Land Act of 1850. John Sold the land In 1855, John died in Brooklyn's Eastern District on January 27, 1855. Death Certificates were never issued, presumably because of problems associated with the recent creation of the Brooklyn Eastern District from the former Cities of Williamsburg and Bedford-Styvescent. John's burial site was never identified. In 1855, Rosetta received a certificate for 120 acres of land in Council Bluffs, Iowa under the Military Bounty Land Act of March 3 1855. She sold the land for an undisclosed sum to a Matthew Scott of Lafayette, Kentucky. In 1870, Rosetta, was enumerated in the Federal Census in the household of her son, Samuel Dean, in New Lots, Kings County, NY. Also enumerated in the same household were Mary Ann, wife; son William, age 13, Isabella, age 11, Samuel, age 6; and Mary, age 3. No further information has been found about Rosetta. . She was not enumerated in the 1880 census and presumably died sometime before 1880. Burial site is unknown. I have included all this detail in the hopes that some of it will strike a cord with someone. I am seeking the parents of John and Rosetta. They presumably occupied the area of Fosters Meadow, Long Island, NY, now known as Valley Stream/Elmont, Town of Hempstead, Nassau Couunty, NY. Local history and DNA tests indicate the most probable ancestors are Dutch and ultimately, Scandanavian. I have information on six generations of descendants of John and Rosetta which I will gladly share.` Lyle Hendrickson ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com Notify Administrator about this message?
