Chuck, what's the source for the surname of Hance Hendrick II's wife Rachel? She is mentioned only twice:in 1754 relinquishing dower in a sale then again and in his will.I have seen no evidence that she was the mother of his children, since the first mention of her is several decades after his children were born.
There are, of course, no marriage records or will records in either King WIlliam or Caroline County, so I'm curious how we can establish her surname to be Ragan.
Also, I think we can prove that Hance Hendrick I was not married to Janitje Van Meter. At least, we can prove that her father had no child of that name.Jan Joosten Van Meter (van Meteren) and his family have been fairly thoroughly researched. In fact, although there is some disagreement, it appears likely that his wife Macyken was a widow and that three of these five children were actually hers by a prior marriage. His 1662 ship’s manifest shows he immigrated with five children, whose ages are recorded but not their names.Jan Joosten Van Meter’s 1706 will names only four children: sons Jooste Janse and Gysbert, daughter Geertje Crom, and the children of deceased daughter Lysbeth. The fifth child had predeceased his father without leaving heirs.Unfortunately for the Jane Hendrick theory, there is no evidence of any daughter named Jannetze or Jane.
