Henrietta Henderson, widow of Richard, did NOT die in Goochland/Cumberland in 1749. In that year she left a Deed of Gift to her 3 sons. This is the estate breakdown:

The Estate of Richard Henderson, Cumberland County, VA 1743-1745

Richard Henderson patented 450 acres on Great Guinea Creek in Cumberland in 1743. This land was adjacent to William Cooke’s 430- acres, and John Brown’s patent. Henderson died in 1748 (will probated 21 Jun 1748).

In his will he leaves the following bequeaths:

ITEM: 1 Shilling teach to the following children once they reach age of 21: Samuel, James, Nathan, Mary, Henrietta.

ITEM: to my Brother Edward Henderson and his heirs forever Two Hundred acres of land to be laid off out of the Tract of Land whereon I now live Beginning at a Hickory by the path between the plantation of the said Edward and my plantation and then to the outside lines for compliment

ITEM: I give and bequeath to my well beloved Wife Henrietta Henderson all my other Land and Estate whatsoever to her her heirs, executors or Administrators for ever.

So, 200 of the 450 acres to Edward;
The remainder to wife Henrietta (FOR LIFE? Or in Fee? I think the law of the day intimated Life Estate with Fee in heirs)

BY DEED of GIFT, dated 28 Aug 1748/9, recorded 26 Feb 1749/50, Deed Book 1/p113, Henrietta Henderson sells 250 acres “whereon I now live on branches of Guinea Creek” to SONS Samuel, James, & Nathaniel.
Witnesses: Aaron Butler (son of Edmund Butler &, we believe, Frances “Cooke”), Nathaniel Henderson, Edward Henderson
Was this FEE or ANY INTEREST she held as widow? Perhaps she retained a Life Estate? Need to see deed again

BY DEED dated 2 Apr 1751, Rec’d May 1751, DB1/333, Edward Henderson sold to Charles LEE, 200 acres, by metes & bounds……this was the acreage he received from the Will of Richard Henderson.

BY DEED dated 29 Nov 1752, rec’d 26 Mar 1753, DB2/34, Nathaniel Henderson (bro of Richard?) to Charles LEE, 230 acres on Great Guinea Creek, “formerly the plantation of William COOK, dec’d….”
NOTE: William Cooke, in 1744, sold his 430 acres grant in 2 parts: 1 to Brown, one to Henderson. This is just thrown in to show that Lee was acquiring both estates.

BY DEED, dated 27 Feb 1754, rec’d 23 Sep 1754, DB2/163, CLEYTON COOKE of Albemarle & Henrietta, his wife, to Charles LEE of Southam Psh, Cumberland, interest in 250 acres on Great Guinea Creek adjoining John Brown, cooper, part of a tract granted to Richard Henderson, late dec’d, “assigns During the term of the life of his wife Heneriator [sic]….”
Wit: Ed Henderson. William Henderson, John Brown

BY DEED, dated 13 Dec 1758, rec’d 25 Jun 1759, DB2/485, Samuel Henderson of Granville [NC], to Charles LEE, “…his interest in & to 250 acres, part of a tract granted to Richard Henderson by patent dated 13 Jun 1743, adj. John Brown & Wm Cook….” On Gr Guinea Creek.
Wit: Claten Cook, John Lee, Edw Henderson.

BY DEED, dated 8 Jan 1760, rec’d 23 Jun 1760, DB 3/66, James Henderson of Granville [NC], to Charles LEE, all his right in and to a certain tract of land containing 250 acres +/- on gr guinea creek adj Wm Cook and John Brown, “part of Richard Henderson’s patent of 1743”.
Wit: Gideon Glen, Charles Henderson Wm Lee.

We believe that Clayton Cooke married the widow Henrietta Henderson and resided in Buckingham. There are descendants of Clayton Cooke alive in Louisianna today whose DNA matches that of the Cumberland Cookes.
