I was just re-reading your message from October 2002 and some of the information seems to fit now.
My husband is descended from the Hemsley line and I'm beginning to think your Henry Hemsley born in 1826 might be ours.
This is what I know.
*Ivy May Hemsley was born in 1909 at Forestgate to William Hemsley and Ethel Jessie Gillate who married in 1908 in West Ham. They moved to Australia around 1912.Ivy was my husband's grandmother. She died recently aged 95.
*William Hemsley was I believe born in 1884 at Mile End Old Town to Helen Caroline Cockett and William Henry Hemsley.They were married in Stepney in 1881.
*Other children were Jessie Adelaide Hemsley who married Sidney Edward Mathews, Minnie Hemsley who married Percy Benjamin Thomas Gillate (also moved to Australia) and May Ellen Hemsley.
*William Henry Hemsley was born around 1857 at Stepney (according to 1881 Census)to Henry Hemsley and Eliza Jane Unknown.
*William Henry Hemsley died aged 43 years in 1900 at Mile End.
*Henry Hemsley 55 years old in 1881 making his birth year around 1826.He is listed as born in Whitechapel.
*Other known children of Henry and Eliza Jane were:
Alfred George Hemsley born about 1864 and Joseph H born about 1866.The children were born at Stepney.
*The family lived at 24 Baker St, London, Middlesex in 1881.
