This is the closest family forum to my family Hempsmeyer, so I thought I would start the posting off.
I have just started on this family, but I have a relative that has done alot of research on this line.
My gggg grandfather came with his parents to America from Hanover Germany, in 1827 at the age of two. His mother died from childbirth, on the way across, and was buried at sea. His father allowed his aunt to raise him in New Amsterdam (New York). About 1853 he married Lydia Louise Oliver in New York. She was born Sept 5, 1836 in New Jersey, and was the daughter of William Oliver and Maria Doremus Oliver.
They had six children:
Emma Louise Hempsmeyer b Sept 12, 1854 New York City NY
Charles Augustus Hempsmeyer b Sept 14, 1857 Coldwater Mercer Co OH
Katherine Maria Hempsmeyer b July 28, 1859 Coldwater Mercer Co OH
Elizabeth Jane Hempsmeyer b Apr 2, 1861 Coldwater Mercer Co OH
Mary Eliza Hempsmeyer b Oct 4, 1863 Celine Mercer Co OH
William Albert Hempsmeyer b Nov 4, 1865 Celine Mercer Co OH
Christopher servered in the War of Rebellion in 1861-1866, as a private in Company K of the Fortieth Regiment of the Ohio Volunteers. He was recruited at Fort Recovery in 1861 and was mustered in the service at Camp Chase Ohio. He was in the first company that was raised in the country to go to war. He was discharged on April 4, 1863 at Franklin Tenn. He was discharged because of illness and couldn't do his duty.
Christopher was a tailor by trade when he went into the service, but we're not sure if he continued in tailoring after he was discharged.
After Lydia died in 1875, Christopher married Mary Catherine Moreland. They had a daughter - Hattie Hempsmeyer. After Christopher died in 1881, Mary married Stephen W Lasner on January 13, 1887 in Golden Jefferson Co Colorado.
Christopher and Lydia were buried at Wellington, Sumner Co, Kansas.
If you are related to this famly, we would love to hear from you.
PS I am descended from Mary Eliza Hempsmeyer Martin.
