Camus House and Cemetery
Hi: A lot of stuff about Camus House lately.First, I should give the GPS location,as I had my hand held GPS with me when I was there. The co ordinates are 55 06.023 N. latitude; 006 38.073 W. Longitude. The cemetery in question is right beside Camus house in County Londonderry on the West side of the Bann River- like,a couple of hundred feet-practically in the yard. It is on the right side of the highway when you are heading South from Coleraine-just a few miles. The cemetery, like the house,is VERY old,(late 1600's)and the stone on the Hemphill grave I saw is broken in two.and needs some moss scraped off to make it more legible. There is a Celtic Cross dating back to St. Comgall's monastery which was on the site, on a little rise just a bit inside the entrance, and the Hemphill gravestone is on a little hill beside a yew tree about a 10 o'clock direction from the cross about 100 feet from it(just picture holding a clock with the hour hand pointing at the cross at 12 o'clock, and then looking at the 10-the 10 is the direction of where the grave is. I have a bunch of pictures on a disc.Zoe, I'll send you a couple of the house and the cemetery and the grave.I had a tour of the house-it's gorgeous!! The location is on a bend in the river Bann-I imagine a great salmon hole. Send me your snail mail address to my eastlink e-mail address. Cheers: Elwin
