Hi Heidi. If your ancestor John Hemphill came from Derry in the late 1700's,it's likely his ancestors are buried in one of three cemeteries on the West side of the Bann.I found Hemphill stones in Camus Cemetery, right beside Camus House, which was built by the Hemphills in 1685. I'ts now a B and B. owned by josephine King. One very old one is broken in two,and was covered with moss, but if it's cleaned up, it's still readable. The Hemphills owned Camus house until 1910. These Hemphills were wealthy, and were descended from Robert Hemphill who came from Ayrshire to the Camus area in the 1600's at the time of the plantation. These Hemphills were partners in a bleaching green with Hunters and MacFarlanes. The present Lord Hemphill of Tipperary is from this line. My Cousin Robbie Hemphill in Portstewart has a neighbour,James Hemphill from this line The other cemeteries are Aghadowey(Lots of Hemphills there) and Macosquin. I didn't visit Macosquin, but James told me there are Hemphill's there. My and Robbie's are descended from the Camus Roebert's brother James, who came over at the same time and settled in Kilraughts, near Ballymoney. Where do you live Heidi? Cheers: Elwin Hemphill
