Hi, everyone. I just discovered that John Lewis Hemphill, who was born 10 Oct 1796 in Kentucky and died 26 Dec 1870 in Bellfontaine, Logan County, Ohio, had a second wife.
We started working on his probate papers and found her.
Her name was Lucinda. She is named in his probate papers, and I found him living with her on the 1970 Census back in Ross County, Ohio, where he had lived previously.
The second disovery is that they had a Maggie Hemphill, age 18, livng with them. No one knows exactly who she was at this point. This is all new stuff!!
If anyone knows anything more about this, please contact me.
Earlier that year, John's son, Matthew, died in Logan County. Possibly murdered. (I am waiting for more information about that.) Apparently, John went back there to help out or something with Matthew's young children, and then John died too, of lung fever. Does anyone know what lung fever is? Is that the old word for lung cancer, I wonder???
Any way, we have deeds to look for and more probate records, etc. And no one seems to know where John is buried. That was really what I was looking for when we discovered the information about Lucinda Hemphill.
Genealogy is so exciting. There is never a dull moment. We are checking the marriage records in Logan County and in Ross County, Ohio, as I write this.
