Abraham and Isaac -- a quick review
Abraham and Isaac apparently were brothers. Abraham shows up around the Doe Hill area (in what is now Highland County) by the 1770's. By 1783 he is living in Greenbrier County (now in WV), as is his brother Isaac and his son Abraham Jr. About 1818 Abraham Jr. goes off to Gallia Co., OH. Abraham Sr. goes to Kentucky in the early 1800's. Isaac and his kids stay in Greenbrier Co.--except for his daughter Hannah, who marries Elibab Wilson of Doe Hill in 1788. (Morton incorectly says Hannah is a daughter of Abraham Sr.) Elizabeth Hempenstall marries James Wilson of Doe Hill in 1785. Jemima Hempenstall marries Samuel Blagg around 1795. Both are assumed to be daughters of Abraham Sr.
The names Hempenstall and Haptonstall are used interchangably, although the latter name seems to have become dominate over time.
Abraham Sr.'s second wife was Mary Wilson, whom he married in 1775. She was the widow of Capt. Samuel Wilson, who was killed at the Battle of Point Pleasant in 1774. She was also the mother of Elibab Wilson, who as indicated above, married Hannah Hempenstall, who was Abraham Sr.'s niece. There is some speculation that Mary could be the mother of Jemima Hempenstall, but so far it is only speculation.
Samuel Wilson, who married Elizabeth Hempenstall, was Elibab Wilson's cousin. And Elibab's wife Hannah was Elizabeth's cousin. So it was all one big happy family.
The Hempenstalls seem to have lived in NY and/or NJ before coming to Virginia.
