Hi,
my name is Hermann Hemmes. Im from the north-western part of Germany. This area is very close to the border of the Netherlands - and from a geographical point of view it actually belongs to the Netherlands ( area of Groningen). From our part of Germany a lot of Hemmes emigratet to North-America starting in the early 18th century.
A lot of the Hemmes-people were busy in ship-building and professions connected to the sea ( sailors etc.) In our Hemmes familiy there were ship builders ( Great-great-great-grandfathers name adrian hemmes) He migrated into Germany coming from the north-sea-coast of Holland. There obviously was a migration along the coastline form south to north. As far as I do know ther even is country side an village close to Callais with the name Hemmes.
First names which are very frequent in our familiy history are Adrian, Andree , Jan-Luiken, Peter, Paul, furthermore Katharina, Johanna
Regards
H. Hemmes
