Dave, I had a quick look to see if I could help. I don't think that I can help directly at this stage, but I do think that you have set off on the wrong foot with this family. The 1881 census describes John Hemingway's birth place as Horbury, not York. The reference to York is actually an abbreviation for the County of Yorkshire (it is one of the more misleading items in the census transcript). There are three 'more likely' John Hemingway births that this might be : Birth, John Stanley Hemingway, Sept 1840, Wakefield Birth, John Hemingway, Dec 1840, Wakefield Birth, John Hemingway, Sept 1841, Wakefield However, I would try to trace the correct John Hemingway by obtaining his marriage certificate to Anne Allemby. I looked for any marriages in County Durham that might fit, but I didn't find one. It seems likely to me that they must have married in the Wakefield / Barnsley area and quite possibly quite close to 1881. I can supply you with a list of all dates when 'John Hemingways' married if you want to use this to cross check against Allemby marriages. Incidentally, please note that one of the Allemby girls is shown as a sister in law, not step daughter. Maurice Notify Administrator about this message?
