Mike, I am three generations removed from Jahial Helton: My mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Milly Helton. I don't think my DNA will show a strong connection to Jahial. I have the civil war records of James, Henry, George, Joseph, Joel and Jehial M. The discriptions of all of Jahial's sons indicated a strong probablility of Indian blood. I also have a copy of an Indian Wars claim made by Jahial's second wife, Rachel Akins. She states that he served as an interperper in the Cheorkee War. She stated her husband entered the service at 35 year old, and described him: five feet, six inches in height with dark eyes, dark hair, dark complection. Jahial died in Conway Co. AR, 1 Mar 1887. One of her witnesses on the claim was J.T.Graham, husband of Milley Helton Graham. I was about 12 when Milley (Mildred)died. She was a short woman, about 5'2", with many indian features. I understand she had quite a temper, and a somewhat mean spirit. She often told the story of the Union soldiers burning the bottom of her father's feet to make him tell where their food was hidden. If I had been a little smarter I would have asked her a lot of questions about her past. I will take a closer look at the Eastern Cherokee applications. Notify Administrator about this message?
