John, Your post is an absolute thrill for me! I have been looking for information on my ggf, Samuel, for 30 years. From the scarce info that I have, it appears that the Sam you mention is in fact him. I know that he was from Fayette City. Clifford's birth certificate says that Sam was a miner. He and Helen/Ellen Whitelaw had two children: a son, Clifford Orton Helterbran (my gf), b. September 11, 1894 in Smithton; and a dau, Elsie Helterbran b. April 17, 1897. Samuel died shortly after Elsie was born and Helen/Ellen moved back home with her parents. A short time later, she married Alva Elder and had 3 more sons. Only Clifford's oldest dau, Helen, remembers hearing anything about Sam. I guess Clifford was so young when Sam passed away, he didn't know much to say. Evidently his mother didn't stay in touch with Sam's family. Any clue as to how Sam may have died or where he is buried? The Helterbran/Elder families have always held their family reunions in Jacobs Creek. Clifford Orton Helterbran married Sophia (Josephine) Matthew Chubboy, Feb 2, 1916 in Fayette County. Their children: Samuel - died at age 6 months Helen Esther - b. June 27, 1919 Clifford Orton, Jr. (Fritz) - b. Oct 8, 1920 David Joseph - b. Dec 2, 1921 Robert Eugene - b. Jan 25, 1923 Raymond Louis - b. Dec 29, 1924 Alexander Gilbert (Turk) - Mar 26, 1926 Ruth Stella - May 20, 1928 Julia Matthew - Oct 9, 1929 Anna Lucinda - Mar 22, 1932 Do any of these names ring a bell with you? Is the relative that gave you this info still around? I can't wait to go back to the National Archives armed with this new info from you. I had run across a few families with a Sam as possibilities; I'll see if the siblings you mention match any of them on the census. Thanks again, John. Feel free to e-mail me direct.
