From what I havebeen told My gfathers father, I have found tonight that his name is Sam, changed the name when they came from germany, Sam (I think) came over from Germany and changed the name to Helterbran because he thought it was less German and thought they would not be so poorly met by those less friendly to the Germans. So anyone with the name Helterbran spelled that way should be a descendant.
That is what my mother had always told me...hope that helps some.
