Peter Helsley - Shenandoah County, VA
I have a family mystery that maybe someone can help me solve. Peter Helsley in his will left "his granddaughter Mandy (Amanda Grandstaff)certain items. They were signed for by her husband John Nicholas Trook so I know I have the right Amanda. Who were Amanda's parents?
1850 Census: Amanda, age 23, is living with Peter Helsley, age 85(her grandfather) along with Harriet Ship, age 37, Rachel Foltz, age 16 & William Helsley, age 20.
1854 Marriage Records in Shenandoh Court House:
Sep 09, 1854 Groom: John Nicholas Trook, age 27 (could be 21 hard to read, farmer, parents George and unknown (even though his mother was dead it's funny that he did not list her name. Bride: Amanda Grandstaff, age 25, Parents: Jacob and Rebecca Grandstaff.
I thought her father was Jacob Grandstaff but who is Rebecca?
I thought her mother was Mary Koontz who died when Amanda was born. Is Rebecca an adopted mom? How does this connect to Peter Helsley? I am really confused. I would be thankful for any help. Carole Trook-Hacker
