Per North Carolina Death Certificates on Ancestry.Com:
Joseph Archie Helms, born 4 June 1873, Union Co., died 17 Dec. 1957, md. to Maggie Gribble, was a son of Charles Helms and Mary McLarty. He filled out a World War One registration in which he gave his name Joseph Archibald Helms. Died in Monroe. Buried at Lakeland Memorial Park.
Arch L. Helms, born 29 June 1878, died 13 May 1936, md. to Flora Presley, was a son of Frank Helms, per his death cert. Under mother's name "D. K." (don't know). They'd actually written "D. K." under the father's name, then crossed it out and wrote Frank Helms. Arch died in Mecklenburg Co., but was a resident of Fort Mill, SC. Informant for the cert. was James Helms. Buried at Pleasant Valley.
I am not kin to these folks, but thought I'd see what I could find for you. I came on the message board looking for information on William Ellis Helms (born c. 1856, son of Carson Helms & his wife Clarinda Helms) who married Gatsey E. King (born circa 1857, my 3rd great aunt). They went first to SC, and then to Arkansas. Gatsey was a sister to my 2nd great grandmother, Rusha Elizabeth King (1837-1894, 1st married Dulin Stearns, 2nd married A. Jackson Edwards). Rusha also went out to Arkansas in the 1880s, but her sons of her first marriage remained in NC. I am descended from her son Dulin Benson Stearns (1863-1962), my great grandfather.
I am also looking for information about Susannah Helms, born c. 1760, possible daughter of Tilman Helms and Rachel Craig. Some sources say she married David Ritch, but I believe she actually married John Ritch (d.1837), and if she did, then she'd be my 4th great grandmother. John and Susannah (Helms?) Ritch, had a daughter, Olivia "Livy" Ritch (c.1802-1869), who married Valentine A. Stearns/Starnes (c.1800-1875). Olivia and Valentine had a son, Dulin Stearns (c.1836-1863), who married Rusha King mentioned above.
I've also got a Helms/Polk connection. Dulin Benson Stearns (1863-1962) married Mary Jane Beachum (1867-1910) of Anson Co. Her parents were Jeremiah Washington Beachum (1830-1910) and his first wife Mary Jane Taylor (1836-1882). After Mary Jane died, Jeremiah married, in 1889, Zilphia/Zliphy Helms (daughter of Joel Helms & Sarah Pyron), who was the widow of William Polk.
