Looking For Robert Helms born abt 1860 Union Co. NC

Hello,
I'm looking for Robert (probably no middle name) Helms born (I'm guessing) about 1860 in Monroe/Union County NC. He is said to have married a Nancy Riley (don't know when). They had at least 1 son Joe/Joseph (NMN) Helms about 1879. I can't find any information in Gerald Helms' book "HELMS Desendants 1720-1984". I did locate Census data as early as 1910 on ancestry.com about Joe's family but no birth info on Joe that might lead me to Robert. There appears to be no Census data on Robert and/or Nancy. Can anyone point me to additional resources that might help me locate Robert and his ancestors? Thanks in advance for any help provided.
