Hi Dorothy,

I am kind of stabbing in the dark here, but here it goes:

My gg grandfather was Uriah W Smith, b 1847. The 1880 census shows him and wife Harriet M Richardson living in Fulton Co, IN, with son Wilson. The connection to Heighway's is that he had a sister named Mariah, who I am having difficulty tracking down, that married one of the Heighway's. I don't have a year of birth for her, but would guess it to have been between 1840 - 1853.

Mariah Smith Heighway lived in Fulton Co, IN, probably near Rochester at least for a while. My mother just told me that she remembers my grandfather talking of the Heighway's from 'down home' which would be Rochester, Fulton Co, IN. She also said that she remembered meeting some when they visited Rochester, but at that time, she didn't realize they were related.

1880 census listed Uriah Smith as b PA, so I would guess Mariah may have also been. I can't find Uriah in any census (haven't checked MI yet) prior to 1880. Do you think there could be a connection to your Heighway family that was in IN and MI?

Melanie Rice
