Lewis Heiges, Wheelwright, Civil War Veteran, Avid Gardener
It has recently come to the family's notice that John Silas Heiges, about whom we have been researching, was the son of a Lewis Heiges, who served in the Civil War with the 209th Pennsylvania Volunteers, "I" Company.Private Lewis was mustered out in May, 1865.Afterwards, he returned to Mechanicsburg, PA, where he was involved in a wheelwright and wagon building business, the products of which were distributed both nation and worldwide to gypsies. In his spare time, he was an avid gardener, and had a rare dahlia amongst his other plants.
Lewis had two brothers, John and Ira, and a sister, Lettie Long, nee Heiges.
Lewis died at age 81 in September, 1926, apparently from complications resulting from a wartime injury. This information was gleaned from an obituary in our family's possession.
