Yes, I concur, from the census your gr-grandfather was Ernest. From the 1880 US Census it can be found that Ernest's father was John Gottlieb Heidel. In a form this census is viewable at www.familysearch.org.Search on the family name of Heidel.Since there are more than 25 returned, click again to see ALL in the 1880 census.Yours for me mapped out to #s 709-717.
Have you discovered this page http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/z/i/m/Paul-Adolph-Zimmerman/FAMO4-0001/d63.htm#P5376http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/z/i/m/Paul-Adolph-Zimmerman/FAMO4-0001/d63.htm#P5376 at The Families of the Amana Colonies website?Scroll down and you will find Heidels who came from WIESBACH & SCHNEEBERG SAXONY which can be found mapped at http://www.expedia.com/pub/agent.dll?qscr=mrdr&fmap=1&rtbl=1&lats1=50.594967786327956&lons1=12.640527790331403&alts1=41®n1=1&plce1=Schneeberg%2C+Saxony%2C+Germany&http://www.expedia.com/pub/agent.dll?qscr=mrdr&fmap=1&rtbl=1&lats1=50.594967786327956&lons1=12.640527790331403&alts1=41®n1=1&plce1=Schneeberg%2C+Saxony%2C+Germany&... just zoom in or out to find these places' relative proximity in southern Sachsen SE of Zwickau.
One source for Heidels in Wartburg placed them once from Thuringia or NE of yours last place of residence. However, all Heidels there may not have come from the sameplace since they seem to have arrived in several groups before and after the Civil War.
