HEFRON/HEFFERON, Michael c 1833, Mayo
Am searching for the ancestors of Michael Heffron. Michael was born c. 1833. Believed to have left Ireland 1850 - 1860 (was married in South Australia in Feb. 1861, giving his father as James Heffron). Michael was illiterate, signing his marriage certificate with 'his mark', so the spelling of the family name is variable. Have found a shipping reference of a Michael Hefferon sailing aboard the South Sea, which departed Plymouth May 2 1855, and arriving in South Australia the same year. A number of related Hefrons have been traced back to the South Australian towns of Kadina and Wallaroo, with occupations as labourer or miner. Rich deposits of copper were found near these towns in 1859, and a thriving mining industry soon developed. At this early stage of my search, two areas are of particular interest - Tipperary, and the north County Mayo area possibly between Belmullet and Killala where there seems to have been a 'nest' of Hefrons. Any help or suggestions will be gratefully received. In return, I have records of a number of Hef(fe)rons in Australia. If you believe some of your ancestors may have sailed 'down under', drop me a line and I will check my small pile of BDM certificates.
