Hello David! Thank you so much for all the information! It was more than I expected and very helpful. The sword I'm talking about is on the Coat of Arms which you can see on the Heffernan.org website. This crest is different to the one you have on your facebook group, where I'm also a member :). (I'm guessing you're the same Dave Heffernan?) I did learn something about the broken sword by reading some of the older messages on the message board. Niels James Heffernan wrote "I am given to understand, but cannot prove, that the broken sword in a mailed hand signifies bravery in the field of battle, against overwhelming odds." I also learned that the crest differs from family to family. Each family can add changes to the crest so that it represents something specific or personal for that family. So there may be several variants of it. I find all of this very interesting and if anybody can add on this (or correct me if I'm wrong) it would be appreciated. Thanks again for your help David! See you on Facebook. Anders Heffernan Notify Administrator about this message?
