Need help to connect to Pennsylvania. Still working on ancestry for William J. Heffelfinger of PA. He married three times that we can document: Hannah J. Fowler, Louisa Simmons and Catherine Baum. William James Heffelfinger b. 24 Mar 1844 or 1848 Pa 1870 Census: in Salt Point, Califonria working as a Tanner Jean: It's hard to say how your great grandfather got to California. Immigrants either came in wagons overland or went by ship (around the Horn or by packing across Panama and catching a second ship). The transcontinental railroad was completed in 1869, so it's possible that he came on the railroad. His trade of tanner was unusual for that area...I'm not aware of any tanneries there, but there must have been a small one operating at the time. I looked at my census notes and checked Heffelfinger's census entry. According to the way I interpret the 1870 Salt Point Township census, he actually was living in a settlement called Fisherman Bay, near present-day Stewart's Point. Hope this is helpful.
